ParticipantWelcome to the forums!
The contact thing is commonly mistaken for an error, though it’s actually not Linda Blair’s eye but that of Captain Howdy/Eileen Dietz.
As for the missing scene, unfortunately there is no where you can watch the full sequence, but there’s a short snippet of it in the 25th Anniversary documentary Fear of God. I assume it was never added back because the sound was apparently lost, but it would be nice as a DVD extra in the future…

ParticipantFrom one of the most terrifying films of all time, comes the latest Cult Classics release: The Exorcist Spider Walk Regan Action Figure. Regan balances on her head and hair to recreate the notorious Spider Walk scene. Regan comes with a detailed staircase display base and multiple points of articulation, including a ball-jointed neck, swivel forearms, and swivel legs. Regan hits shelves with the rest of Cult Classics Series 7 this June and a Possessed Regan in Bed Boxed Set is in development now for release later in 2008.

ParticipantI was treated to three early sneak-peek trailers for the film. Looking really good, like a mix of Wolf Creek and Evil Dead. 🙂
Prey will premiere at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival next month.

ParticipantI don’t know if this is the final version or not:

ParticipantFrom the novel:
Chris turned out the light and went down the hall. She climbed the narrow, carpeted stairs that led to the attic. She opened the door and felt for the light switch; found it; flicked it, stooping as she entered.
She glanced around. Cartons of clippings and correspondence on the pinewood floor. Nothing else, except the traps. Six of them. Baited. The room was spotless. Even the air smelled clean and cool. The attic was unheated. No pipe. No radiator. No little holes in the roof.
“There is nothing.”
Chris jumped from her skin. “0h, good Jesus!” she gasped, turning quickly with her hand to a fluttering heart. “Jesus Christ, Karl, don’t do that!”
He was standing on the steps.
“Very sorry. But you see? It is clean.”
“Yeah, it’s clean. Thanks a lot.”
“Maybe cat better.”
“What?”
“To catch rats.”

ParticipantThe corner is very clear. The wire is next to that, on the right. Look while you’re watching the movie, and you’ll see it moving. Maybe I can put together an animated GIF.
Justin
ParticipantThe last one is hard to see, but the other 2 are quite obvious. Look in the center for the wires swaying with Regan…

ParticipantI never really went looking for them, because frankly it has ruined the whole effect for me now… I just happened to spot them when watching TVYNS on DVD (it’s much easier to spot them in TVYNS, probably because of the clear picture compared to the original). Now every time I watch the film they really stand out.
Justin
ParticipantThe only one I know of that most people generally miss (it’s not in the subliminal section on here) is the very faint image of Captain Howdy over the right side of Regan’s face during the close-up shown when Merrin arrives at the house.
I assume that’s what you’re talking about (because it is your avatar)?
Justin
ParticipantThe rig for the Spiderwalk scene is completely different to what was used with the levitation though. But you’re right, there are ways of hiding the wires, and I think they did a pretty good job when she’s coming down the stairs from the far angle. When it goes to the front close up though, you can clearly see them (in the original scene, that is).
I can still see, in both TVYNS and original, the wires holding Linda up during the levitation too. I always wondered why they didn’t fix that up in TVYNS.
Justin
ParticipantRemember though, the original wasn’t taken out solely because it didn’t really add anything. A big factor was because they didn’t have the technology to clean up the scene and remove the stunt wires, etc. IMO I think the original would have worked fine. It’s nothing supernatural, it just adds to the question if Regan is really possessed or mentally ill.
I have no doubts that the bloody one was added for shock value, though, Friedkin said so himself in one of Mark Kermode’s books.
I can’t remember exactly what he said (it has been quite a while since I read it) but it was along the lines of he forgot about filming that scene and so he used that one to surprise people as most had already seen the other.
You can just tell by watching the scene that the blood is real. The way it’s dripping out of her mouth and onto the stairs on the way down. Her facial expression look as if she’s trying to hold it in. The blood itself has the look of fake blood back then, too.
I have never seen realistic CGI blood in any film. Things like dinosaurs are easier because we have never seen them in the flesh, but CGI liquids and such are very easy to spot (IMO, anyway).
Justin
ParticipantActually… the blood isn’t CGI, it’s just another take that Friedkin completely forgot about. I prefer the original take, like in the novel.
Justin
ParticipantI think you need to stop being so negative (especially when all we’ve seen is a few prototype images), and be happy that we’re finally getting something.
It’s better without the blood, anyway.
Justin
ParticipantI don’t think it looks like Linda (except for the nose) nor the stuntwoman. Remember this is not final product though and it’s likely there will be a few changes. Hopefully that’ll include the face.
As the update says, too, there will be a box set based on Regan which includes her in full possession. Despite not even being in the original film, the spiderwalk is still a very iconic and is probably why they are releasing images of it first.
Justin
ParticipantZac Efron as Regan.
