I do not object terribly to TVYNS but I have to admit that like most touch-ups it needs more work. That’s the big problem with retouching old films. Once you’ve done it, you want to go back and fix it again and again and again. Look at how many version there are of Star Wars. However I do believe that they are making progress each version being slightly better than the last and they used audience reaction in some cases to determine what to change in the next release. I can see the same thing happening here.

So then using CGI to paint out the cig is the only option? What a shame? I am not betting to see it removed in any new release any time soon.

I agree that there is a temptation to overdo and under-do when they retouch films, which seems to be getting more and more common. Has anyone seen the remastered original Star Trek episodes? Some of them are tasteful. Some of them are less tastefully done.

Thanks fada for such an in-depth analysis. Never realized it was so complicated an issue. Is it possible that something was cut from the final and remained cut in the new version that would had explained this. Perhaps a take showing the new cig being lit? I am not clear if you have ruled that out or not? Also, you believe inserting a close-up of Chris taking a second cigarette would not work?
