ParticipantSomething else I noticed…
Â
In the original Exorcist novel, the demon liked to use the word “incidentally” a lot…
..as did the Gemini Killer in EIII the movie. 🙂

ParticipantSounds very interesting. 🙂

ParticipantI agree. If you have both of these on Blu-Ray…show them in chronological order…original first, then TVYNS. The picture quality for both, I'm sure, is stunning. 🙂
Steve Dunlap
ParticipantI'm not really sure that watching TVYNS first would actually diminish the enjoyment of the original. Fr. Bowdern and I talked about this before….and it's not beyond the realm of possibility that someone who'd seen TVYNS first would still find the original untouched version superior. 🙂
Â
But, one's actual mileage may vary.Â
Â
I can certainly agree that one SHOULD see the original version first, because my experience was….I saw the original when I was a kid back in '73.  It scared the hell out of me for a long time.  And just when I thought I'd conquered it, along came TVYNS to up the scary factor again…and I had to reconquer it all over again. 🙂

ParticipantI say go with your gut instinct.  Me, I usually show my friends TVYNS. I love both versions, but TVYNS definitely upped the scale for me in freakiness.  Sometimes, though, I will watch the original with my friends, just to show them how freaky the original was without the enhancements.

ParticipantI've been watching the featurettes on disc five of the Alien Anthology.  WOW….some really great behind the scenes footage and screentests there.  I'm lovin' it.
Â
(SPOILER ALERT in case anyone has not seen any of the Alien movies, or at least, any of Alien's sequels….SPOILER ALERT…you've been warned)
Â
Â
I remember, once upon a time, I was writing my own story of Alien IV before Alien Resurrection came out, and it would've carried on with the notion that Ripley was dead per Alien 3.  My story would've indeed brought the aliens to Earth, where, as a result of the infestation, Earth becomes a battleground between humanity and the infestation.  I was going to have Bishop's creator (whom I wanted to portray as sort of a good guy in my story, despite his intentions in Alien 3), and Morse (the only one who survived the incident on Fury 161) be the main characters.   My story would've involved the Colonial Marines and Army, and we would've seen a world almost similar to the future of Terminator…..dropships hovering in the air, and APC's on the ground, hunting down aliens.
Â
I had a really good story wrote up for it (incomplete, but quite detailed). I wish I could find it, but I wrote it on typewriter, so it has long since been lost.

ParticipantI do think Cash might have made a good background character….perhaps another priest who attended Chris MacNeil's party in the film. Perhaps he could've have done some entertaining in a scene, much the way Father Dyer did on the piano.  A quick snippet of him singing a song, showing that his priest character (just like Dyer) had another passion besides the clergy.

ParticipantI also see you are a fan of DUNE.  Perhaps we can discuss DUNE in the off topic section? 🙂
Â
I checked out your poster and your trailer. The poster is very professional looking, and the trailer was very well paced….very contemporary in its standards for production.  Well done.

ParticipantI think it would've been interesting to see Cash as Karras, but he would have to pull some serious acting chops to have maintained credibility as Father Karras. To my recollection, back then, I don't think country singers (or most musicians in general, regardless of genre) would've had the kind of acting gravitas necessary to pull it off. I don't know that he would've had the casual and naturalistic approach that Jason Miller had in that role. I would be afraid that his lines would've sounded “read” and forced, and not expressed.
I also agree with your other point….the youth of today are extremely desensitized to almost all forms of violence and horror.  Even 6 year olds today just look and laugh, or show no sign of revulsion or terror.  With everything today being “right here, right now”…with no sense of build up or anticipation, true terror and horror just don't stand a chance.  Everything is cheapened with instant results.
Â
But also remember this, jguthrie.  Laughter is often a way to shield some folks from genuine terror.  It's quite possible that some of these kids who laugh at such scenes are merely laughing to try and conceal their insecurity from viewing them.  I know it's a stretch, but it is a possibility.

ParticipantI have to admit, I had a funny thought in my head:
Â
The door opens to Regan's bedroom and in steps a man dressed in severe black, with a forlorn look on his countenance as he gazes upon the scarred visage of Regan.
Â
The DEMON:Â I'm the Devil!
Man in Black:Â Hello, Ah'm Johnny Cash.
Â
😀

ParticipantI am interested to see this movie.

ParticipantYes, Blatty did an excellent job for his first outing as director. 🙂

ParticipantFather Bowdern said:
Yea, I give props to the creator. God knows s/he will come up with a combo of both films next!Â

Father Bowdern
And he claims he was drunk when he made this.  Many props to that guy! LMAO! 🙂

ParticipantI need something like that. 😀

ParticipantI also agree with Kokumo.  Dominion was a far superior movie to Exorcist The Beginning.
Exorcist II had great potential, but yeah, for the most part might as well have been Disney's first R rated movie.  And the voice of Pazuzu was so diminished in threat….athough, as a kid, you couldn't tell me different….that face of Regan's still scared the hell out of me.  But after I conquered the original Exorcist,, nothing fazes me. 🙂
