KeymasterWow, talk about bringing a topic back from the dead! This bad boy was started almost 3 years ago!
I'm still not a fan of Friedkin's TVYNS commentary. I must admit I need to re-listen to the old commentaries from the 25th Anniversary DVD– which are on the Blu-ray. Might do that over the weekend.

KeymasterFB,
I indicated that the 'speed' of the dripping blood, and amount, may have been enhanced digitally because on set the amount, drip and colour may have been unsatisfactory– but she did have blood in her mouth at the time of shooting (for at least one take), Roizman's BTS footage clearly shows us that.
I love this topic, by the way. 🙂 I love how passionate we are about this topic an otherwise perfect film!

KeymasterJagged,
It's these kind of anecdotes that make running captainhowdy.com worthwhile. A truly interesting insight into seeing The Exorcist during a time when it was not permitted. I could never fathom such circumstances.
Jason Stringer
KeymasterI still believe the blood was already there and shot on set, dripping from the stunt woman's mouth. I think the dripping speed was enhanced and more blood added with CGI years later for TVYNS.

KeymasterPerhaps the monument scenes could be added in full as an aside feature on a future release, but I never want to see them included in the film. The Extended Director's Cut is bad enough. The Original Theatrical Cut is, and always will be, superior. The pacing is so precise, it's a shame less people will bother with it and go straight for the 'spiderwalk cut'.
Jason Stringer
KeymasterThe blu-ray book book explains that the spiderwalk was sped up and digital blood was added to enhance the blood that was already there. I guess, better 'dripping'?
The things we discuss here sure do make for some strange sentences sometimes

KeymasterIt's almost 330am and I've just finished watching the Original Theatrical Cut on Blu-ray for the first time. My heart grew warm. It looks fantastic, it has never looked better. I honestly felt like, at times, I was seeing it for the first time all over again. I was filled with nostalgia and joy. Such a masterpiece!
Simply amazing.

KeymasterYou know, I'm still yet to read that Video Watchdog write-up. Â

*Hangs head in shame.*

KeymasterYou're right FB, that was a poll that ran quite some time ago (and was quite popular). My database should still have it stored, I'll try to dig it up and surface it again.

KeymasterOK thanks for your replies!

KeymasterThe design, pictures and layout of the book were out of Kermode's hands for that 25th Anniversary book– I wonder if this 'disapproved' edition will have the same images and similar layout but with different text?
Very intriguing!

I've got a couple of copies of that. It's not written by Kermode. It came from the large overpriced 25th anniversary VHS box set (the one with the lobby cards and senitype in).
I have the same 25th Ann VHS box set and double-checked just now: the book I have most definitely is by Mark Kermode.

KeymasterWhen Fear Of God was made, a re-release with added scenes was in planning (TVYNS was, ideally, supposed to celebrate 25 years, but was late in execution– partly because of time taken to find and restore footage).
Perhaps Kermode found both spiderwalks and was politely asked to keep the bloody version under wraps so it could have full impact in the director's cut?
I'd trust anything Kermode says over Friedkin any day. (Sorry, Bill, but you have thrown some wild ones out there in the past!)

KeymasterI may have to bid on this. It's relatively low. (Tricky GBP, though).

KeymasterThat's great, thanks for posting! Nice to see The Exorcist getting great coverage thanks to this tremendous Blu-ray release.
