Levitation down to the wire

CaptainHowdy.com Life Member Justin kindly took his time to generate some imagery in the Discussion Forums which illustrate exactly where wires are visible during the famous levitation scene in The Exorcist.

I’ve only been able to see The Exorcist on the big screen on two occasions, and both times I was too engaged in the story to be looking for fx wires. I was always a little skeptical when people would say they were distracted by the wires in this scene; because I know director William Friedkin and his team did a wonderful job of hiding them during the production. Indeed, they mostly went by unnoticed in the early years, but more and more today we have people online saying they can clearly see the wires.

Is this because today’s audiences are getting used to (near) perfect CGI effects where all wires are easily erased? Perhaps. Either way – thanks to Justin’s enhanced images – I can see how it may have been possible to spot the wires on the big screen. Look closely on your TV, and they are there.
