All good points, gang. I especially like nick’s “The way the movie slowly builds, the sense of desperation and loss of all hope.” That’s the way the movie is intended and if you’re smart enough, you get it. 😉

Best advice I found and use myself:

    http://www.leadpipeposters.com/preserve_poster.cfm

Value is always iffy. If you bought it from a seller on eBay versus, let’s say, Southeby’s, the value will vary incredibly. Ebay has often had unscrupulous sellers that make reprints and, because posters lack a COA oftentimes, you could be stuck with something that’s worthless because it hasn’t been valued by an appraisal firm, like Sotheby’s. Also, the condition (you may say “mint” like you did in your posting) and the poster size matters.

It may be worth finding an appraiser and asking, usually for a fee, though.

I hope you have the real deal! 🙂

    Muddy,

Look through the Discussion archives here on CH.com. The last posting, I believe, said there is no news from WB about releasing it yet. WB has released so many versions of The Exorcist on Laser Disc Platters, VHS, Beta, and DVD, that we’re all hoping for a B-R version … which, of course, WB will take full advantage of … after all … The Exorcist is still a cash cow for the studio.

Um, I seriously doubt it is an OCR version that we see on the www … have you ever seen a software program that works well enough to turn handwriting into text? I haven’t. Most programs have a hard enough time with “typed” text to be legible.

Anyway, I do believe that Blatty “may” have been refused access to the diary, but I’m sure the contents were conveyed well enough by one of the priests to come up The Exorcist novel. And, it makes sense because Blatty was studying, at one point in his early life, to become a Jesuit priest, correct?

Ahhh, postings are for our best friend, Justin, on CH.com. He is our miracle on animated .gifs. (Justin, you can see what I am referring to on the first and second dip of the silver teaspoon into the coffee cup by Lt. Kinderman).

If I can find a way to post it (I don’t know how, I will).

Captain, how the heck do I post something directly on here? If Justin is away and can’t, I will. Thanks! 🙂

Oh, I’m not saying that Blatty read the diary at all before writing The Exorcist novel. I have always been under the impression that Blatty did not actually get to read the actual diary itself, but that the story was conveyed to him through Father Bowdern or Father Halloran (I don’t remember which one or if I have the priest right).

And, of course, I’m pretty sure this “diary” is a typed up version of the hand-written “diary.” We really don’t know how well it was interpreted (or if it could be at the expense of penmanship) on the part of the transcriber.

Still I’m not sure if I can “buy” any of it. Some things are just plain vague … the bed shaking (well, we can all do that if we’re on top of it) and the urinating (big deal) and the farting (whoopee … no pun intended).

As far as things being flung from one side of the room to another, there’s nothing to indicate poltergeist activity in the diary notes. Ronald could have just thrown the holy water bottle off the nightstand into the corner of the room and the part about him grabbing the bottle could have been left out.

But, I still rank The Exorcist as my favorite novel and movie. It doesn’t matter to me if it’s based on a “real” story. It’s Blatty’s writing technique, both for the novel and the film, that enraptures its audiences.

I agree with you mego wholeheartedly. I met a group of 18 to 20-year-olds coming out of the first screening of The Exorcist: TVYNS and their comments ranged from: “What a piece of shit!,” “We paid for that?,” “Oooooh, that was soooooo scary, NOT!,” “The special effects sucked!” And on and on and on.

The main complaint: “That was so boring!”

Granted, IMHO, they were wound up from something and that something may have been in the realm of thinking at least to some degree. Although, I would have hated for “those” particular younger people to have used a brain cell or two to see what it is that they were missing altogether.

    It’s a shame.

    JP … I did see it! 🙂

The cameraman is to the left and the light box is to the right. Apparently a white sheet is thrown around the background, but the silhouette of the man (on the far left) and his camera (closer to the middle left) are there. Pretty cool when you see it!

I did see the quotes, however, in the diary the references to another individual is hashed out. So, I’m thinking it was an egregious error. I don’t think the priest journaling would have used “R’s” full name since he was so careful in making sure it only appears that way elsewhere. Good thought though.

Oh, dsea, have you read the diary? Some of the actual quotes are so similar to what Blatty wrote that he must have had access to diary prior to writing The Exorcist.

Not a big deal … but, I wonder why Hunkeler is consistently referred to as “R” and then there is one entry giving the full name? I wonder why the priest’s entries failed on only one occasion and was never edited:

    Tuesday, April 12. (Index)

Action began after the exorcism prayers were completed. During the general recitation of the Rosary by the Fathers and Brothers the regular performance began but with the omission of writing on R’s body. The noise and singing were very disturbing to everyone. R gave no response to the “praecipio” except to imitate the Latin words, then laugh, or say, “Stick it up your ass.”

One new phase was the display at the devil’s power over the senses and external personality of R. In one instance the devil said he would have R awaken and the boy would be pleasant and attractive. The devil’s promise was true. A few minutes later the devil said he would have R awaken, but this time he would be offensive. True to the promise R came out of the spell very irritable and he complained quite bitterly to those who held him.

Several attempts were made to give R Holy Communion after midnight, but each trial was unsuccessful. The devil showed definitely that he was not R speaking, for he said, “I will not let Ronald receive Holy Communion.” It was about l:3O AM before quiet sleep followed.

Can anybody see my Gravatar? It should be animated and I’m testing it out. I’m using the “Local” feature in the Profile section because if I use the WordPress.com and Gravatar.com locations (it says to leave that line blank in the Profile section if you use your registered WordPress.com email – check!), nothing happens. WTF?

    Anybody, please?

Yeah … bummer … they are .ram files and you can’t open them with WMP or RP. Maybe WB will share the server again. If you click the link on the bottom, it says “Page not found.” Oh, well. 🙂
