Don, I agree and that is a funny reply! I often wonder how Hager could have held that much fake blood in her mouth for let it rip for that a period of time.

I had assumed it was supposed to be her own blood (sorry for a typo on “bleeding” in my previous post) — unless she's supposed to have bitten somebody else along the way.  That she would still be at home in the next scene seems jarringly illogical.  So, I think that the bloody mouth was a bit too much.

I should add that I liked most of the restored scenes, as I felt they filled out the plot and the characterizations.

But the “subliminal” ghostly faces popping up here and there — now that was annoying.  Subliminal, my butt: I could even pick them out while fast-forwarding the movie to research this scene!

So Friedkin figured it hadn't been scary enough, so he'd go back and add some punctuation?  That's crazy!

Professor M, two full commentaries from Blatty and Friedkin can be found on the 25th Anniversary disc.

I have that disc and I checked it out again. It's pretty much as I described here,

    . . . but I'll elaborate.

Blatty has a track in which he reads, for about an hour, an essay regarding his involvement with the film.  But it's — in my opinion — not a “commentary” at all.  It's not keyed to the film.  (If he had been watching it along with us, he's not paying attention.)  It's quite interesting to hear, but there's no particular reason to listen to it while watching a silent version of the first half of the movie! Then, there are ten minutes of sound tests with dueling demons saying nasty things, and totally without regard for the accompanying video: it plays over scary scenes and sedate ones.  After that, the extra track stops and the film soundtrack takes over.

I'd realy wanted to hear Blatty's comments on every scene, and I was disappointed by this.  It could have been an audio-only extra on the DVD.

That last effect seemed illogical: if she were really bleening internally to that degree, she'd have been hospitalized immediately.

    You’re right!

Quatermass and the Pit, a really thoughtful piece of science fiction.

Keep James Earl Jones, but put him in black armor with labored breathing.

    “Regan . . . I am your father.”

I’d read that when an owl appears to turn its head 360 degrees, the bird really turns as far as it can, then snaps it back around and picks up the motion so fast that the movement appears to be continuous.

So, while 360 may be impossible, maybe 300 degrees can be achieved, if the devil makes you do it.

Was Damien really born of a jackal?

Who cares: he’s a son on a bitch any way you look at it.

PSYCHO II was an interesting sequel, actually being helmed 20+ years later and still with Anthony Perkins. There were numerous homages to Hitchcock in the art direction.

Perkins’ own PSYCHO III is okay, if another step down. The TV-movie Part IV is just a curiosity.

Warner Brothers released CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN, DRACULA and THE MUMMY on DVD in the U.S.; HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES was an MGM video release.

I’d still appreciate a new edition with documentary, and a commentary by Blatty, possibly others.

Did Blatty ever do a real commentary on THE EXORCIST? All I have is a track on the Version-You-Never-Saw, but it’s an essay that has nothing to do with the action , and it stops long before the movie is over.

Friedkin did two commentaries, I think, and his earlier one is far better.
