Presumably paranormal power and/or paranormal strength for the strap. Definitely paranormal levitation.

Why it happens is a good question. Presumably the invading demon is displaying its power, again presumably to impress, dominate and terrify the witnesses. Paranormal stuff purportedly happens in all three stages of possession – infestation, obsession, possession. Perhaps it is all deliberate action on the demon’s part. Maybe some of it is just something that happens as part of the demon’s nature.

    Anybody else have suggestions?

I always wondered if the man in the glass tube is Dourif in cassock – interesting that Blatty kept Dourif-as-Karras in – though it’s such a short flash no one but fans is likely to notice…

Excellent catch, Padre. Unfortunately, I don’t know where it would fit in the movie. Much depends, of course, on who the corpse is (was). Looks like he’s wearing a sweater. That potentially disqualifies Fr. Carnoven (sp? the confessional priest killed by the Gemini) and Fr. Dyer, because Carnoven was killed wearing his clerical garb, and Dyer was killed wearing a hospital smock. Of course, Carnoven could have been wearing a sweater under his confessional robes which, blood-soaked, could have been removed and turned over to the police as evidence

But one character who _does_ wear a sweater is not in Legion, but in the original Exorcist – that would be Fr. Karras (Merrin, too) – because Regan’s room was so cold.

Could this be a photo from the actual night of the exorcism with Karras on the coroner’s table before being remanded to poor Brother Fain for final preparation?
Maybe Blatty would have wanted to start Legion very definitely on the night of the exorcism but later fell back on the highly symbolic opening shots that were finally filmed?

The body on the table seems a bit old – from the little that can be seen (the hair that I can see looks whitish – but that could be glare?) – to really be Karras. But the “cording” in the sweater looks like the kind of sweater Karras was wearing at the MacNeil house.

If Karras’ cassock had been removed but not the sweater, it could conceivably be him on the table.

Glad you think so – I can’t think of who else it would be. What an potentially interesting film the complete Legion would have been…

Actually, this is for another thread but if WPB doesn’t do another Exorcist novel, it would be nice if he would do a book on the making of Legion, complete with photos of production, deleted scenes, etc. Tell his side of the story and share all the gossip – and fill us in about all the Legion puzzles and mysteries.

You know your Dad, so you are the best one to suggest or not suggest a sequel. But you might try showing him Legion.

But first explain the trepidations you’ve expressed in your post here.

Then – because Legion is directed so differently from Friedkin’s film – you might “soften the blow” by explaining that there is a certain amount of visionary/symbolic/surreal stuff in Legion that was not in the Friedkin film. You might explain the early scene of Miller’s narration as the camera moves down the Georgetown street toward the MacNeil house at the end of the street – and a man in a priest’s cassock runs twice across the street. He’s hard to see because of the credits, but we are obviously meant to think that this is Karras – or Karras’s reconstruction – of himself on the night of the fatal exorcism.

You might also prepare your Dad for Scott’s grouchy and gruff Kinderman, as compared to Cobb’s more kindly version. Certainly a word should be said about the expanded relationship between Kinderman and Karras in which Karras is now Kinderman’s “best friend”, an intimacy that did not exist in the original film. Also you might emphasize that Flanders, not Fr O’Malley, is now playing Fr Dyer.

That said, you might ask your Dad to just be patient and wait for the best stuff which is yet to come, namely, Kinderman’s confrontation with the Gemini – the scariest part, and the core, of the film.

No, I only heard that Demeter was perhaps being planned – just the rumor, nothing else…

Yeah, the Beginning was tripe most of the way thru, although I thought the Nazi parts were well done (although they could have been placed differently, e.g., at the film’s start as happened in Dominion). And I actually felt my face blushing all thru The Heretic…
