I often wonder how often Cobb and Burstyn had to rehearse that scene …

Have you ever wondered what the damned souls inside of Regan are saying in reversed English during the holy water scene? We only get partial playbacks in the university’s language lab as Karras reviews the tape.

Below is the full scene’s audio in two parts. Part 1 is the scene as it appears in the film; Part 2 is that same scene played in reverse. The backward audio, when played forward, often sounds like lines intentionally spoken in backward English. Lots of interesting finds in the masterpiece’s holy water scene.

    Enjoy!

    Columbian,

Yes. This is from the original 25th Anniversary Box Set. I have two or three signed (sentitype) box sets somewhere in my moving boxes:

The soundtrack from this box set contains:
    1. Iraq (01:56) Jack Nitzsche/Krzysztof Penderecki
    2. Five Pieces for Orchestra (01:11) Anton Webern
    3. Polymorphia (11:49) Krzysztof Penderecki
    4. String Quartet No. 1 (07:14) Krzysztof Penderecki
    5. Beginnings from “The Wind Harp” (02:41) Harry Bee
    6. Kanon for Orchestra and Tape (09:52) Krzysztof Penderecki
    7. Fantasia for Strings (02:21) Hans Werner Henze
    8. Music from the Unused Trailer (01:10) Lalo Schifrin
    9. Suite from the Unused Score to The Exorcist (11:11) Lalo Schifrin
    10. Rock Ballad – Unused Theme from The Exorcist (01:52) Lalo Schifrin

    MHOs:

    1. Iraq (01:56) Jack Nitzsche/Krzysztof Penderecki (Classic and succinct for the film’s opening … a calling card like that of Oldfield’s Tubular Bells.)
    2. Five Pieces for Orchestra (01:11) Anton Webern (May have worked in Whatever Happened to Baby Jane … not The Exorcist.)
    3. Polymorphia (11:49) Krzysztof Penderecki (My second favorite … Friedkin used snippets in very clever ways throughout the film.)
    4. String Quartet No. 1 (07:14) Krzysztof Penderecki (Overwrought and overpowering piece written while Penderecki was stoned.)
    5. Beginnings from “The Wind Harp” (02:41) Harry Bee (Falls into a sound effects category, yet again, Friedkin used snippets here and there very cleverly.)
    6. Kanon for Orchestra and Tape (09:52) Krzysztof Penderecki (Majoring editing, yes. Friedkin … amazing find!)
    7. Fantasia for Strings (02:21) Hans Werner Henze (My favorite … a classic way to end a classic horror/drama film.)
    8. Music from the Unused Trailer (01:10) Lalo Schifrin (I like it … for a movie trailer.)
    9. Suite from the Unused Score to The Exorcist (11:11) Lalo Schifrin (Great Amityville Horror music …)
    10. Rock Ballad – Unused Theme from The Exorcist (01:52) Lalo Schifrin (Great 1960’s James Bond movie feature sex scene music …)

Also, to Ghetto’s point, you’re right. Friedkin wanted a documentary-style film and leaving the music out worked very effectively for obvious reasons to us all. Go, Mr. Friedkin for a very a talented eye and ear.

Just a quick observation from my forensic scientist point of view: I am finding interesting parallels of new fans and researchers who are initiating blogs with the same topical subjects over the past few days.

This is the best place to gather that research. Which leads to me an overall hypothesis that a book and/or research project is in the works simply because the word “research” has already been established in the questions posed … at least twice by two different individuals. If this is the case, I am already assuming the application of credit(s) to the original author’s ideas expressed in their responses will appear in this hypothesized published work. Am I correct?

MattyJ, I would look at the questions of new fans and those doing research. These include Possessed_Fairy (05-03-2009), HannahT (05-03-2009), chardos (05-05-2009), and Jon (05-06-2009).

Yes … the R2 DVD (Europe) is uncut without the CGI objects used in the R1 DVD (U.S.) during the orgy scene.

Okay, no takers on the smoking/not smoking/smoking scene. It’s an easy answer (and don’t come on here and say, “I knew that … you had plenty of time since March 31st to answer!). 🙂

So, without further ado (click to enlarge):

    Hi hannaht,

IMO, “cult movies” are similar to the Rocky Horror Picture Show that are repeatedly shown in movie theaters somewhere almost daily in which the audience members dress up and act out the parts on the screen. Examples: Water pistols to imitate the rain during the storm and performing the TimeWarp. I’m not sure if this occurs in other industrialized nations, but it certainly occurs here in the U.S.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, I don’t view myself as a “cult fan” of The Exorcist, while this film certainly has that status for many others. Also, the word “cult” used for this film may wrongly imply Satanic worship of sorts (that’s just a blink thought and does not apply to every individual).

Hope that helps for a quick analysis.
