ParticipantNice post, Cap. I now can see how the head can spin with the more malleable plasticized hair.
Justin, I noticed that comparison too of this new figurine, but thought I was just thinking too hard about it. However, we both seem to agree on “that†particular and irritable version of the demon-possessed Regan from EII. BTW, I have searched everywhere to find out who that particular person is, but she remains unknown. Again, Karen Knapp is the uncredited voice of Pazuzu: “Karen replaced the male voice that was originally cast after the movie previewed.†– imdb.com. I would now venture to say, Justin, that Dietz will feel more compelled to attribute that photo as her at conventions. What a shame … she now has a new figurine to go along with her bobble-head and the spider-walk figurine. 😉

ParticipantThanks, Cap! In the U.S., we’re being bombarded with television commercials and I’m still not tempted to pay to see the film. In fact, the commercials are the same trimmed-down version of the “best parts” of the trailer.
Unfortunately, I can’t find my original post back in late April/early May that was prompted by another member. Regardless, it appears our minds are syncing after reviewing the trailer. In total agreement with you is your observation: “Exorcist: The Beginning and Dominion: Prequel to The Exorcist were both so dreadful (not only did they bomb, they also got a hiding from critics) that studio Morgan Creek has all but shelved their Exorcist license until further notice.”

Correction: Actually I found a link to my secondary original post located here dated May 15, 2010. I believe I wrote the original, as noted above, in late April/mid-May. Sorry I can’t find the original-original. 🙂

ParticipantFudge! Oh well, you can always bid on this upcoming auction at the same site:
The Exorcist Museum quality Linda Blair Head Sculpture. A life-size silicon sculpture of the head of Regan (Linda Blair) from the 1973 Academy Award- and Golden Globe-winning horror flick The Exorcist. Detailed with brown hair and convulsing red and blue face, along with a purple protruding tongue, this is an amazing recreation of the demon-possessed little girl. >>>The sculpture was not made for production use, but rather was created long after the movie’s release by special effects and studio make-up man Henry Alvarez. In Fine condition.<<< Sure, sure. Father Bowdern

ParticipantI’m so happy to see the differences in tonal values due to Roizman’s control over the transfer. Amen!
Justin, this is an outstanding comparison! A few very good points by seeing your chart is the re-coloring of the bed linens (from gold to green) in the “Lost & Unconnected†scene; the brightest of the entire room in “The Sow Is Mine†scene; the more realistic colors in the “Know What She Did?†scene; and the truer color of Merrin’s purple stole in the “Ritual Guidelines†scene.
Ceru, you are very accurate on your observations about the 1997 DVD and TVYNS releases. A lot of us have made that same comparison on here about the nauseating purplish-blue tint that Friedkin did the last theatrical release (I refer to this as putting lipstick on the Mona Lisa quite often). Friedkin is a great director; not an even good cinematographer … look at he did to The French Connection.
I am completely happy with the bit of snippets I see like this. In time … in time.
BTW, when I saw The Exorcist in 1973, 1974, …, here’s what it looked like in movie theaters during my youth! 🙂

ParticipantHmmm … I will listen to my audiobook narrated by WPB on the plane (yes, vacation time!). I’ll be sure to catch the part about Regan taking a dump on the alter if it’s there. I just can’t remember reading about that before.
Better yet, SOFIA! Rescue time. 🙂

ParticipantDon’t worry. You’ll find another one. Usually the individuals who buy movie-related memorabilia for high-dollar are Japanese eBay members’ U.S. eBay buyers. Sounds funny? Nope. I’ve sold more movie memorabilia to Japanese collectors at top dollar than the norm. I owned floor grates from the films Alien and Aliens principal photography shoots and sold them for hundreds of dollars. Here’s an old copy of the photo I used on eBay …

BTW, these milk crate sides and bottoms are a dark green plastic sprayed over with silver paint that was severely chipping off when I received them. They are probably the least impressive thing to see in person, but worked great in the films.

ParticipantCap, now you know your wife and kiddies would love this! YIKES! I guess you could use it as some form of mental torture and have the most well-behaved children on earth:
Jason: “See. This is what I did to your older sister when she was bad. Now you don’t want that, do you?”
BTW, the guy charges 666 USD … how appropriate. There is another seller from the “Mac Neil House” with a video that cracks me up in the auction listings!

ParticipantAmen for Roizman! Even on an HD monitor at 360p, the colors look tremendous. I’m sure that WB will be running commercials very soon here in the States after 9:00PM sans the mature scenes. I do believe this is the best montage put together for a trailer in a very long time. I know it is for The Exorcist. Plus, Blair looks incredible in the new interview.
Thanks for sharing this!
In time … in time.

ParticipantI couldn’t agree more with both of you. E2 was an absolute nightmare … and not in a good way to say the least. Even if The Exorcist didn’t exist, and we watch the film as new novelty, it was a total train wreck. Indeed, E2 crumbled Blair’s career by no fault of her own. The only plus is seeing Regan’s mounds of glory! 😉
With EW voters, these are the hounds of 15 minutes of fame by having their erroneous comments posted on a website for everyone to see. It’s sheer stupidity.

ParticipantJustin,
What a great read from my teen years! There were many critics in 1973/1974 who had to eat their own words. Many of them did a secondary retraction review after they had egg on their faces when filmgoers wrapped around theaters just to be a part of the next audience to the see the film. I was there with my dad and we waited over two hours just to get inside the doors.
Thanks for sharing this!

ParticipantPhillips often ranks animated/younger-audience-themed films more highly on his all-time-favorites lists than many of the movies that a true critic would rate from an overall perspective. For instance, in 2008, Up and Where the Wild Things Are ranked number 1 and 2, respectively, while the Oscar-winning film, The Hurt Locker, came in at number 4 according to Phillips tastes. Personally, I think he’s very off in his critiques because he rated Brokeback Mountain dead last on the top-ten scale while dismissing the Oscar-winner, Crash, altogether. I just gather that his Disney-esque frame of mind couldn’t handle The Exorcist.
As far as the EW ratings? That list of overrated top 20 films includes Gone With the Wind, Citizen Kane, 2001: A Space Odyssesy, and Doctor Zhivago as losers by EW voters. These are obviously individuals who lack any common sense and just dinged the all-time classics. With comments by raters such as this, “I LOATHE Close Encounters. It is the WORST. It makes me want to scratch my eyeballs out of my head. Ugh! — lettergirl,” I believe the valley-girl ratings speak for themselves.
