    Justin,

I can’t wait either. Thanks for finding these tidbits (WB should pay you for marketing the BR release!) I’m sure Roizman will get top marks from critics for restoring the natural colors … looks great!

    epic,

Search your local area for an AMC, Cinemark, or Regal cinema online by googling each one. You can buy tickets online or call the box office.

    etrigan,

I agree. “Dumbbell” was probably a naughty word like “mother fucker” back then. 😉

At any rate, I agree that Blatty had to know something about this case and used it later in his film The Exorcist III. I’m sorry to say, but this scene is so whacked that it makes laugh every time I’ve seen it.

Also, Blatty did a lot of research and included the levitation scene in The Exorcist based on the cases from various religious and spiritual accounts; i.e., Magdalena de la Cruz and Yogi Subbayah Pullavar. The phenomenon worked in the original, but caused hysterical laughter in the second, skewed attempt.

This is for “The Exorcist Director’s Cut Event” showing across the U.S. at select NCM theaters. Notice the use of the word “Event.” If it’s like most of the garnered movie events here in the U.S., we can probably surmise we’ll see lots of fans dressed up as their favorite characters from The Exorcist. The running time is 2 hours, 45 minutes which is accounted for by this statement from NCM Fathom:

“NCM Fathom is partnering with Warner Brothers Home Entertainment to bring back the most successful horror film of all time for a special one night event – The Exorcist featuring the Director’s Cut version. For the first time in ten years The Exorcist Director’s Cut will be in theatres along with never before seen behind the scenes footage and interviews with William Friedkin and members of the original cast.”

Who? NCM Fathom? Well, directly it means: “National CineMedia (NCM) LLC operates the largest digital in-theatre network in North America through a venture of AMC Entertainment, Inc., Cinemark USA, Inc. (NYSE: CNK) and Regal Entertainment Group (NYSE: RGC), the three largest theatre operators in the U.S., along with additional Affiliate theatres. Our national theatre network includes approximately 17,100 screens in approximately 1,400 theatres in 47 states, reaching approximately 680 million moviegoers annually.”

Good, that means we’ll have the lastest digital equipment (Sony’s 4K) that offers the best quality digital video to date in all the NCM theaters (not to mention the newest in audio technology).

I hope this becomes another tradition like the The Rocky Horror Picture Show for the fans of The Exorcist. I’m in … I have to find my cassock, purple stole, and holy water bottle. 🙂 Grab your tickets now because most theaters are selling out early.

Ugh. I hate to defend this movie at all because it will probably suck but the 1928 Earling Iowa case supposedly had “wall clinging” as one of its supernatural occurrences.

I do hope the writers of The Last Exorcism chose to not use use these kind of setups and script:

“Let it be noted, too, that Father Theophilus addressed the devil in English, German, and again in Latin. And the devil, Beelzebub, and all the other devils, replied correctly in the very same tongues in which they were addressed. Apparently they would have understood any language spoken today and would have answered in it. Sometimes it happened that Father Theophilus, while in an exhausted state of mind, would make slight mispronunciations in his Latin prayers and words of exorcism. At once Beelzebub would intrude and shriek out:

“So and so is right! Dumbbell, you don’t know anything!”

“Dumbbell?” This one mighty nasty demon who curses like a school girl and uses suctions cups to climb the walls. 🙂

    Justin,

Now that is funny (and only tells me it’s going to get worse over the next two weeks!) Notice the new trailer here. For some unknown reason, Cotton’s exorcisms increased from 47 to 50. Uh, oh … there’s even advertising problems.

I have always viewed the ending as a triumphant situation of good, not evil. I never thought of Karras not being possessed during the fight because Friedkin and Blatty worked it out by including the lines: “Come into me. Goddamn you, come into me.” Karras then has the same palor and eyes as Regan once did for that brief moment before he struggles “internally” with the demon and plunges to his death in order to save Regan.

Although Karras said earlier in the film that he thought he had lost his faith, the ending to the original film proved to me to be an unselfish act. This, of course, is just another view of good triumphing over evil.

I truly enjoy the original ending and agree with some individuals that the conversation between Dyer and Kinderman only makes the film lag and really adds nothing. Dyer looking up at the window and then fading to black is much more sensitive and thought provoking, and I think Friedkin did a fine job of cutting that sequence that is now a part of TVYNS.

Of course now that I have the equipment to watch blu-rays correctly, I’m seeing the 3D push in just about every store. I’m getting tired of the changes to the newer technology that’s only just begun. What’s next? Willy Wonka’s incredible shrinking machine of live actors? 🙂

…do you think ‘Possessed Karras’ would have strangled the cured Regan to death if ‘Good Karras’ hadn’t fought back?

I used to think that, Ceru, but now I wonder… Pazuzu’s aim wasn’t Regan, it was Merrin and, in the end, Karras’ faith using Regan as a vehicle. I wonder if Pazuzu kind of got his way in the end – Merrin died and Karras committed suicide.

I guess this is why Blatty always worried that the original cut of the movie was a ‘downer’, because we never saw Father Dyer meet up with Kinderman and start a friendship before the credits rolled.

But, all the audience cared about was that the demon went away and was going to leave Regan alone. Friedkin was very clever with his editing in that original cut.

    Bravo on the analysis, Cap.

Ah, yes, the spider walk scene and what we know now:

    1. The original and first-ever published version assembled from “all the found footage … outtake footage” by Mark Kermode and Nick Jones for Mark Kermode’s BBC – The Fear of God – 25 Years of The Exorcist documentary included on The Exorcist (25th Anniversary Special Edition)in 1998.

    2. The bloody CGI spider walk version in The Exorcist: The Version You’ve Never Seen (now entitled, The Exorcist: Extended Director’s Cut) released in 2000. The now-defunct URL for “Exorcist Faqs by William Friedkin,” Friedkin clearly states: “We restored everything we had that was complete in both sound and picture. The spider walk had to be digitally restored for the new release.” Friedkin continues, “Now with digital technology, we have been able to make it look convincing. There was no alternate version of this shot.”

From a USA Today live-chat article, “The Exorcist’ 25 years later: Director William Friedkin,” Friedkin answers another spider walk question:

“On oakland ca: hi just wanted to ask how did you guys come up with the spider walk she did in the movie just released and was it hard? by the way thank you for rerelewasing [sic] it i [sic] still love it alot [sic] it was one of all time favorites thank you. april”

William Friedkin: “And thanks to you, April!

“The spider walk comes from reports of similar occurences [sic] in demonically possessed people. I cut it when the film was first released because this was one of those effects that did not work as well as others, and I was only able to save it for the re-release with the help of computer graphic imagery.”

Will we know about the reality of the use of CGI or the reality of filmed versions with fake blood? Well, if we see something about the use of CGI used for the spider walk, it’s obvious. If we see behind-the-scenes photos or clips of the filming of bloody versions of the spider walk, that’s obvious, too. If the nothing exists about the spider walk on the BR special features, I side with Friedkin’s responses coupled with Kermode’s comments to believe that CGI blood worked its way into that scene. I can only hope I am wrong and get a new thrill from this thriller.

    In time … in time.

    Hi carlamae,

Actually a right-click won’t work, at least not for me. You’ll need to put the photo(s) on an online media host like ImageShack or Webshots. Justin, a Life Member on here, typically, if not always, uses Imageshack. I use Webshots, but will eventually move to Imageshack because the images are larger.

I am not the expert on here at all, but someone like the Cap or Justin can tell you more about clicking the “link” button and pasting the URL in your post. Basically, the answer is yes.

Shout out to Justin: What are your settings; i.e., your original image size and how many pixels doe ImageShack offer? I can only link a “NEW” 600 pixel picture, but it sucks.
