Maybe the scene of Karras looking at the sunset where he used to “find God”; a scene of him counseling a younger priest (Chris observes a scene like this but we can't hear the dialogue); Karras putting money into the “urine-soaked” pants of the passed-out drunk, instead of just walking away; there could be a Karras voiceover telling us what he's reading when researching witchcraft and demonology, some of whose details would add a purely verbal chill to the film…

Yes. All nice touches that would have made some interesting changes.

I just finished eating when I came across this. There was something about communion hosts made out of flour, feces, semen, and all things that are disgusting.Bearing this in mind, I must leave now and go vomit. Those descriptions of black mass were even more disturbing to me than the crucifix scene..I have to wonder what must have been going through Blatty's mind as he was writing all of this down.

I was thinking the same thing. This is sick, creepy stuff. If memory serves, in the novel, Karras mentions that “satanism” is a psychiatric disease in which particpants cannot experience sexual pleasure unless accompanied by blasphemous words and acts. Blatty skillfully blends this all-too-human symptomology with the very real possibility that a demon is lurking in a Georgetown bedroom … creepy stuff again.
Late-night scenes of Karras and Kinderman respectively researching this twisted stuff. Actual “black Mass/witchcraft” desecrations in the church … Regan's fingerprints on the blasphemous altar card, her paint on the desecrated Mary statue … real “satanic” practices being carried out by an innocent twelve year old who ought to know nothing about them … except (Blatty's genius at work again), she may have read about them in a book left at the house by the psychic Mary Jo Perrin. Regan – is she a sick, acting-out little pervert or a truly possessed innocent … ? Is the demonic real, or just a series of peculiar mental disorders? Blatty continues this guessing game to the very final pages … what a writer, what a book.
granville, do you think the very final pages answers the guessing game and, if so, exactly how. I agree that Blatty is brilliant because he added to so many angles to leave readers guessing or making their own final assumptions on so many parts of the novel.

June 23, 2012 at 6:38 AM in reply to: Friedkin confirms 40th anniversary blu-ray coming next year #26154fatherbowdern
ParticipantI never thought that I would say this, but I am so over WB beating this cash cow to death.
For those of us who invested money in the 2010 blu-ray that included the extra “documentaries” and Roizman's BTS material, THAT blu-ray should have represented the best that WB had to offer for a much anticipated premiere blu-ray of The Exorcist.
If my assumptions are correct, considering the three year difference between these release dates, it would appear that WB launched a covert and well-orchestrated three-year plan IF they held back additional material purposefully. That is where the rubber meets the road and I'll just watch any “extras” on YouTube.
Friedkin is a great director. Friedkin is also a great pitch man. It doesn't matter to me if, “The new Exorcist print looks exactly like what it did through the viewfinder when I shot the movie.” Friedkin's forgetting that he had film in the camera that couldn't capture exactly what he saw at that time (and quite frankly that IS hyperbole, Mr. Friedkin).
I'll pass and wait for the 50th Anniversary Edition that will be morphed into IMAX 3D and then 3D blu-ray.

June 23, 2012 at 5:57 AM in reply to: Limited edition 25th anniversary box set with signed print Linda Blair? #26153fatherbowdern
ParticipantEddie,
It is indeed the 25th Anniversary Limited Edition Collector's Deluxe Box Set. It included:
– 25th Anniversary DVD
– CD Soundtrack (sans Tubular Bells for legal reasons)
– 8 Limited Edition Lobby Cards
– Commemorative book on the movie (along with Kermode's book)
– Felt-lined fitted black slipcaseThe “signed picture” is actually the matted movie print with a film cell a.k.a. senitype. The senitype featured Blair in demonic makeup along with von Sydow and Miller. Blair signed several of the mattes in gold Sharpie with various jargon including: “You make my head spin! Love, Linda;” or “Sweet dreams! Lots of Love, Linda.”
I had several copies that I purchased directly from a video source outlet in Florida. I held on to them and resold them later, but kept my favorite one with the first signing from Blair.
If you see a description that refers to the box set as being “sealed,” that may not be completely true and seller's do not even know it. It's a high probably that you will have a signed sentiype if there is a small slit that runs the length of the box set to allow Blair to sign the senitypes and were they were carefully reinserted back into the box sets. Just be aware you may NOT get the signed sentiype as your seller could have a “general audience” version as WB royally screwed up with production and didn't make enough box sets to fulfill the demand.

ParticipantEpic,
I like your thinking. Did your teacher? How did you grade?

ParticipantBecause TVYNS is garbage, IMO. Never tinker with perfection and add additional footage of senseless filler that was originally on the cutting room (where it should have remained).

ParticipantAhh, aunt Ellen is such a good egg and, yes, she is beautiful and even more so at family gatherings.

Haha, that hair defies the laws of gravity.
I don't know how to animate hair on Milkshape, Father B 🙁 but I already put the bends of her elbows in the middle of her arms, thanks!Â
It's turning out good, Molly! I'll show you the animation being played before I import it to the game. 🙂
Hi Sof,
I don't even know what Milkshape is! LOL! At any rate, it's great work … carry on!

Btw, I'm finally learning how to use Milkshape so I can create and then import my own animations to the game. 😀 It's really hard but not as hard as I thought it would be!
The first animation I'm creating is the spiderwalk, I need to fix the hands pose lol but this is how it's looking so far:
Sof, can you make Regan's hair fall with gravity and put the bends of her elbows in the middle of her arms? Not a criticism, but rather a suggestion because I know absolutely nothing about the program you are using.

ParticipantEpic,
What was your final outcome for key traits for Father Merrin and Damien Karras?
Father B
fatherbowdern
ParticipantHi Epic,
Specifically, what did your teacher want you to look for in the key traits of the priests? Are you being asked what is the only key trait or several key traits of each character? For instance, Father Merrin's key traits could be focused, scholarly, unafraid, or simply the saviour.

ParticipantLarson has already been busted by mainstream news. Just Google him and watch how much money he gets tax-free from his escapades.
Sad.

ParticipantThe only clue or conclusion that you draw from the film is that Karl's reply to Chris's questioning makes him look guilty:
CHRIS: Karl? Did you put this in Regan's bedroom?
KARL: She is going to be well?
CHRIS: Karl if you put this in Regan's room I want you to tell me, now did you?
KARL: No. It wasn't me. I didn't.

ParticipantThe demon needed to get Karras' attention to succeed in its final plot to kill Merrin. It worked.

Participantkokumo … I don't think so, although your alternate helmers are interesting. To me, EII was doomed from the beginning because WB wanted a sequel too quickly. Ultimately, the original tagline, “Somewhere between science and superstition …,” just didn't blend too well into another horror film of The Exorcist's caliber. It's not what audiences wanted obviously.
