Shhh … I certainly hope a remake is never done … leave the classic films alone. Wink

    88,

You can buy the director's cut and see just about everything you want on that version … but wait … we should have a 40th anniversary edition lurking in the shadows as it reappears more often in a new format, etc. often.

    88,

Yes. Just look for a DVD version with the documentary listed on the back panel.

    88,

You mean for sale through a distributor I assume. If so, not to my knowledge.

    88,

Regan actually is not glued down to the stairs. The figure is only slightly poseable and it really won't make sense to place her in another position unless you like to have her hair standing on end with bent legs. Laughing

    Splake,

I would never want to influence anyone about their faith or beliefs and I appreciate yours as an individual.

You make very valid points drawn directly from the book and film, The Exorcist. As you wrote:

“#1 – Unnatural strength, #2 – Knowing things that one can not possibly know, and #3 – speaking a language they have never been exposed to or studied” are creative concepts used to describe the very essence of the character that Blatty carefully constructed for all us to enjoy.

Unfortunately, Anneliese Michel did not suffer from one of the above supernatural abilities. To me, this is where things can get “hairy” because science should have played an important role in her case. I would think that even Christ, had he been alive and called upon when her case happened, would have wanted to “exhaust the somatic and psychiatric possibilities first [paraphrasing very loosely here]” before attempting something as intense as exorcism.

These were the best scenes along with the candy bar boink that Justin created!

    Howdy  95 miyu!

Here's a link to a file on here that I did a long time ago. It may help in understanding granville's point, especially why Merrin never uses a name (another wonderful aspect from granville as usual). Smile

My video helps, in what I believe, to understand that there are multiple “souls” crying out from Regan's body. Are they all evil “demons”? Hear what you think below:

(See page 2 because I can't directly link or you can search “Speaking in Tongues” to find it on the website's search box.)

PS: Check out Captain Howdy's Translation of the conversation between Karras and Regan/Pazuzu/Captain Howdy/et al. The conversation, in my eyes, is an intentional bait and switch that successfully leads Karras into the right direction of what then was a “confirmation” that the Catholic Church would accept as a true sign of possession. Just pay attention to the replies to Father Karras's questions …

    Translation

Ever wonder what the conversation between Father Karras and Regan/Pazuzu translated into?  I did, so I went and did some investigating to find out what it all means in English… here is a translation of that scene which occurs the second time Father Karras visits Regan and records her voice.  Enjoy!

    Regan
    mirabile dictu, don’t you agree?
miraculous to talk about, don’t you agree?

    Father Karras
    You speak Latin?

    Regan
    Ego te absolvo
    I pronounce you clean (forgiven)

    Father Karras
    Quod nomen mihi est?”
    What is my name?

    Regan
    Bon Jour
    Good Day

    Father Karras
    Quod nomen mihi est?
    What is my name?

    Regan
    La plume de ma tante.”
The pen (or quill) of my aunt.

granville is on a roll! 🙂

If we dig a little deeper, Michel did indeed see The Exorcist when it was released in Germany two years prior to her own possession. Imitation is the biggest form of flattery … and also deadly with a mind so fragile and overwrought with seizures and medications that were very ineffective in the 1970s.

Her voice is similar to those of psychotics in Bellevue who have reached stages of hysteria. It is a voice that not even closest family and friends can recognize.

Check out her case. The courts found guilt for those who killed Michel. I assume that the tapes did not scare the jury into believing it was “demonic” enough to find innocence.

granville, A+ on your thoughts re: Anneliese Michel's case.

Anneliese died after 67 “exorcisms” from starvation. Of the 42 taped exorcisms, not one single taped session provides any proof of any “demon” that was present in the room … other than the demon called, “religious hysteria.”

Certainly, gran. I remember Sofia saying that you have reviews on IMDB, but I can't remember your username on there. Of course, I would have a hard time finding your reviews on that site because I'm not too adept at navigating their site.

Yeah … if we believe Merrin, “there is only one” personality, and “the Dennings personality” is exactly that – a persona taken on by the ever-deceitful demon.  If viewers miss this, then they may, as you say, leap to the idea that there was a sexual connection 'twixt Dennings and Regan …

Exactly and well worded and even more insightful, gran. I guess Merrin tugged at me when he revealed “there is only one,” in his infinite wisdom to set the record straight for Karras who understood there to be multiple “personalities that Regan has manifested.”

    KARRAS –
“I think it would be helpful if I gave you some background on the different personalities Regan has manifested. So far, there seems to be three. She's convinced …”

    MERRIN (Interrupting Karras) –
    “… There's only one.”

I wonder why this topic reappears from diferent members from time to time? Neither the novel nor the film come close to indicating that Burke molested anyone. I have a hunch that what leads some viewers of the film to believe this must be true is because Burke's voice eminates from Regan when she spins her head 180-degrees at the end of the masturbation scene.

To sidestep the issue, it can also lead to a puzzling question as to whether that really is Burke speaking through Regan or simply the demon doing a grand imitation to reinforce the point to Chris to call in the priests … especially the one that demon desires to get even with which is Father Merrin.
