ParticipantJenny,
Interesting point … read Matthew 8:28-34 and see the parallel between Christ and the swine.

Thanks bursyl. Yes it did take a few hours to put it all together, but I enjoyed every minute of it. Placing those lines from the film on the soundtrack added an eerie quality, I thought. It was painstaking, but it works! Thanks again.

Jason, I know this is the best video of the behind-the-scenes I've ever seen and it will be hard to ever top this. You definitely have the great skills of a professional director/editor/producer. The sounds and music are eerie and often unexpected … just enough to jangle the nerves!
Thanks again for putting together this video!

ParticipantSof,
I get it … share it when you're done! It will be a nice comparison piece.

ParticipantI actually saw the film in theaters when it was released. In 1973, no one debated or even noticed the tonal, gradient values like we do today such as those represented in a lot of David Fincher films, for example.
IMHO, Roizman saved The Exorcist from another disaster like The French Connection transfer that Friedkin ruled over. TFC looks like shit and Friedkin claims “it's his work.” He's right. It belongs to him and he can watch it all by himself. Never tinker with an intentionally gritty, grainy, raw film like TFC.
The Exorcist, however, is brilliant thanks to Roizman.

ParticipantWell this wil set me and Sofia off on another tangent about why this scene had to be cut. There is no behind-the-scenes recordings of this scene … or is there? Isn't it just appropriate that the year 2013 is the 40th anniversary? Ultimate Exorcist Blu-Ray anyone?

ParticipantGood thoughts again!
This leaves us with where is Regan? Is she truly, “In here. With us.”? It seems literal in terms of Regan actually being inside her own body with the ability to write “help me” backward …

ParticipantSteve and Jagged – Those are probably two of the best thoughts I've read about the demon.
Steven, very nice summary in terms of the Alien/parasitic viewpoint … very well thought out.
Jagged, that’s a great capture in terms of faith, religion, and humanity.
Â
So, let's say that the demon escaped, fled, or was forced out by Karras just prior to his death plunge; where would the demon have gone and what was the demon's mission? I know I'm inviting a much longer conversation about the demon, yet it is one that is not addressed in the film's finale.

ParticipantGreat points, karras13!
While the demon inside of the Regan could not be physically harmed, do you (and others who contribute here) believe the demon died at the end of the film or did the demon simply return to his origin?

ParticipantLooks boring just like The Rite. I do hate it that Paramount actually ripped off one of The Exorcist's most famous advertising taglines by re-writing the original: “Somewhere between science and superstition, there is another world.”
Ripped off for The Devil Inside and skewed into “Between Science and Religion.”
Tsk, tsk … no originality … yawn.

Those Channel 4 “100 Greatest” shows are pretty poor representations of public opinion. They tend to only attract votes from 16-20 year olds and definitely do not accurately picture what we Brits really think.
And as for the talking heads they employ to narrate, they are mostly folk no one has ever heard of who could not otherwise get work on TV. They are designed to be made for cheap, last for several hours and go out on a Saturday night which is when we have generally low viewing figures as anyone with a pulse is out enjoying themselves, not sat at home watching cheap crap on TV.
Thanks, Jagged for the insight. It explains the rationale of the voting system, etc.

Did Blatty intentionally influence Burstyn (directly and via Friedkin) to mimic MacLaine?”
I think I read something about this on Shirley's book, Dance While You Can! I'm going to read that Chapter again and let you know!
Sof,
If that's true, I just scared myself! Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery (except when you're up for an Academy Award for a part based on yourself).
