ParticipantNow I can't find that. Maybe I assumed. I know when Kinderman was grilling Chris he kept saying it was most likely an accident but then he continued grilling Chris. So I would say it wasnt really answered but I would assume he just ket it go as an accident.
I would have to read it again (for the 50th time!) to know for sure.

ParticipantI prefer the new cut best. THe only change I would make is the tongue spider-walk be thrown in there instead of the bloody one. Speaking of the spider-walk, I think it would look better if they slowed it down a bit. It looks sped up.

That is without a doubt my favorite part of the Blu-Ray.

ParticipantRemember that it was ruled an accident by the coroner. Kinderman just had a hunch it was murder. He left the case open until he could rule out his murder hunch. I believe at the end he knew something extraordinary had happened and he knew in someway Regan was responsible. He trusted in the priests that the situation was handled and I would presume let the case of Dennings stay an accident.
Â
In fact I just dug out my copy and Kinderman knew that Regan was at least believed to be possessed. He was just never completely sure why Karras had killed himself other than he had “snapped” from lack of sleep and the death of his mother and the demonic attacks. (Page 336 in my copy.)
October 10, 2010 at 6:30 AM in reply to: Q: Why does Regan react in pain if it is just tap water the priest uses? #23434etrigan69
ParticipantExactly. The demon was stringing Karras along. Karras is skeptical so the demon enjoyed playing with him. He would give him evidence but would then mentally pull the rug out from underneath him. What the demon really wanted was a face off with Merrin and I think was just having fun with Karras until Merrin arrived.

And welcome to new and old fans of the movie. Stick around and I think you will be shocked at just how deep this movie actually is.

…its so like the demon is always there…so why's it gone?!

ÂThinking about it this way, I'm kind of glad they're missing from the latest version– although, like you and many others, I was surprised. They were kinda cool.
I am glad theyre gone too. They just seemed so amaturish to me. I still would like to see the “tongue” version of the spider-walk thrown in…..

ParticipantJust realized the commetaries are the same from the 25th and TVYNS. Very disappointed as especially TVYNS version is possibly the worst commentary I have ever heard. After 10 mins Friedkin pretty much just describes the scene for you. Nice if youre blind but otherwise useless. It would have been nice if they would have gotten a third party like Mark Kermode involved for a new commentary with both Friedkin and Blatty together. Maybe in another 10 years….

ParticipantWell the Blu-Ray put to rest the question of the bloody spider-walk being shot during production or added CGI. I wish they would have shown the complete Captain Howdy sequence but…..
etrigan69
ParticipantI think a younger audience that hasn’t seen Rosemary’s Baby and The Wicker Man and even Blair Witch might like this. It’s all new to them. If you have watched any occult horror, there’s nothing new here……
etrigan69
ParticipantI saw it tonight. Should have saved my 11 bucks… No let me rephrase that, younger people may enjoy this but if you’re older you’ve probably seen this already.
This movie is a mash-up of Blair Witch Project, Exorcism of Emily Rose, Rosemary’s Baby and Prince of Darkness. The Exorcist never comes into it.

ParticipantWhen I saw “dumbbell” the first thing I thought was it was either altered for the religious pamphlet or it just shows how silly the account of what happened was.

etrigan,
I agree. “Dumbbell” was probably a naughty word like “mother fucker” back then. 😉
At any rate, I agree that Blatty had to know something about this case and used it later in his film The Exorcist III. I’m sorry to say, but this scene is so whacked that it makes laugh every time I’ve seen it.
Also, Blatty did a lot of research and included the levitation scene in The Exorcist based on the cases from various religious and spiritual accounts; i.e., Magdalena de la Cruz and Yogi Subbayah Pullavar. The phenomenon worked in the original, but caused hysterical laughter in the second, skewed attempt.

The endless supply of vomit and conversing with the demon was in there too. For me this case had more in common with “The Exorcist” than the Rob Doe case which really only had writing on the skin.
etrigan69
ParticipantYeah I caught that too but it’s also obvious Blatty used this case when he was researching The Exorcist. Mind you this was a pamphlet that made the rounds in the 30’s.
etrigan69
ParticipantUgh. I hate to defend this movie at all because it will probably suck but the 1928 Earling Iowa case supposedly had “wall clinging” as one of its supernatural occurrences.
etrigan69
ParticipantI never got that either. It was assumed that it was an accident but Kinderman didn’t want to let it go. I thought Kinderman just kind of wrote it off as an accident even though he knew Regan committed murder in her “illness”.
I also believe that the Hunkeler case was nothing more than a bored troubled teenager taking his family and the priests for a ride. I think that’s why he has never got involved with any of the hype from The Exorcist. Embarrassment.
