KeymasterI’m interested to hear about people collecting copies of The Exorcist like I do– to help me (and my wife) feel better about how much I hoard for this tremendous film.
The oldest copy I own is a 1974 Digest 8mm print. The next oldest is a 1984 VHS cassette, which is very worn. I’ve never tried to play it for fear it would break.
I also have countless copies of the book (no, really – last count was bout 12 copies).
So, how about you?

ParticipantThe 1997 DVD is the oldest I have. For now.

KeymasterJustin, I remember buying that DVD before I even had a player! OH, I also have a laser disc (but it’s in storage so I can’t check the year).

ParticipantWell since The Exorcist was banned on video for god knows how long I had to hunt for a long time to get to see the film for the first time. It took years but I managed to get hold of a pirate copy on cassette that must have been a 10th generation copy of the early 80s pre cert tape. The quality of the picture and sound was horrible but after so many years longing to see the film I loved every miniute.
My first official copy was the 25th anniversary box set with the lobby cards. You know the one.

ParticipantCap,
Have you checked into how rare the 1974 Digest 8mm print is? WOW!

Oh yes I know the one! My only regret is that I never got the DVD version of that box set– I only have the VHS cassette.

It’s the only one I’ve ever found and I paid quite the price to get it!

ParticipantWell, I *used* to have the VHS copy in the cardboard slipcase that was widely available, before the 25th Anniversary plastic snap-case with the postcard-sized lobby cards came along.
I can’t remember if, before the movie, it had that old zooming Warner Communications logo, instead of the WB shield. But it did have a Warner Home Video animation with cheesy synth music! The novel, I have my aunt’s old paperback, purple cover, with the banner “See The Movie, It’s The most Electrifying Thing That Will Happen To You!”
Honestly, I was kinda hoping she had the original 1971 hardcover with dustjacket, those suckers are rare! That reminds me, the more recent novel reprint with the smudgy green cross design on the cover. There’s a girl’s face in the middle of the cross. Is that Linda’s face, or just a generic girl’s face?

ParticipantI have the 2006 Dvd boxset with all the Exorcist movies. That is the oldest I have. It isn’t old at old. I try.
The oldest book is the 1974 purple paperback book.

Cap, I can imagine. Just think of its value as appreciating every day. There will be so many hardcore fans willing to pay a hefty price for your copy when The Exorcist hits 50!

ParticipantI used to have a pirate copy on VHS that came in the original UK WB large case, but it has gone walk-about over the years. So now, the copies I own are the U.S 25th Anniversary VHS, UK 25th Ann Box-set VHS, the UK DVD releases of 25th Ann.Edition and 2000 TVYNS and the Exorcist Anthology 3 disc boxset. Next to add is the Blu-Ray! Woohoo!
The only copies of the novel I own are a 1971 first book club edition on Hardback and the 1977 re-issue on paperback. Looking forward to the special edition reprint from Cemetary Dance Publications coming soon. That will contain both The Exorcist and Legion in deluxe hardcover edition.

ParticipantThe oldest I had was the VHS of The Version You've Never Seen.
I then got the five movie DVD set.
But, nothing beats the original memories from having seen it as a 5 year old back in 1973. 🙂

KeymasterSteve,
You're right, nothing beats the cinema experience of The Exorcist.  Even as a …. FIVE YEAR OLD?? ÂÂ

ParticipantLOL! Yeah! I'd seen commercials on TV back then, and I had noooooo idea what I was getting into when I begged my parents to go see it.  We went to the drive-in. We were pulling up just as Regan was being scanned by that big rotary x-ray machine. I wasn't so sure about my beggings then. ÂÂ
ÂÂ
The very first time Regan throws her head back and bellows in the voice of the demon……I made a swan dive under the dash….I didn't resurface again until later…and then I saw Regan hurl all over Karras, and immediately went back under the dash.
ÂÂ
My dad didn't exactly help matters after we got home and I tried to go to sleep. He would come in with a flashlight under his face one minute and scare the bejeezus out of me.  Then, a few minutes later, he had the funny notion to start rattling my bed. Wanna talk about one terrified little boy at the time? LOL! Was amazed I didn't pee myself, or worse.

ParticipantMy oldest copy of the movie is a copy of the long defunct RCA Selectavision CED disc
