The Fear of God: 25 Years of The Exorcist

For as long as I can remember, The Fear of God: 25 Years of The Exorcist has been the most requested video here at Everything Exorcist.

Produced and directed by Nick Freand Jones, The Fear of God aired on the BBC in 1998, written and presented by renowned Exorcist journalist Mark Kermode. It was the first time the majority of the cast and crew were brought together to discuss the making of The Exorcist and it remains the only documentary to include anecdotes from Jason Miller before his untimely death, making it the most complete and perfect Exorcist documentary ever produced.

The Fear of God: 25 Years of The Exorcist was featured on the 25 Year Anniversary editions of The Exorcist and has appeared on subsequent blu-ray releases.

I was lucky enough to obtain 12 copies of this 25th Anniversary DVD Boxset that, and unfortunately, Warner Brothers did not make enough copies of for us Exorcist fans. I purchased all 12 of the ones I “had” from a wholesale distributor in Florida for about $30.00 (they sold for $99.00 I believe). I had a PC crash and lost the information about the website (sorry, folks). Oddly, all of the boxsets I purchased had broken seals and much to my surprise, all copies of the included Senitype in the boxes had been signed by Linda Blair. How’s that for a find? I’ve sold them all except the one I have with Linda’s signature and, “You Make My Head Spin!”

I had the Fear of God documentary on my Exorcist VHS tape (I think it was the 25th anniversary edition) even though it is not mentioned anywhere on the box. I bought the DVD trilogy boxset which claims to have the documentary – it must be an easter egg or something because I can't find it anywhere.

Can anyone help me with information? (or possibly a link to video footage)

I'm looking for the original opening to the Fear of God, it isn't on the video here. It started in silence with a video from Eileen Dietz's 'Pazuzu' make up tests (quite possibly the most frightening thing I've ever watched!). Then there were a series of clips set to Tubular Bells ending in the raised lettering on the stomach with the title. I want to see it again for some reason, even though it's bound to give me sleepless nights.

Was the intro edited out for any reason? I'm a bit curious – was somebody (Kermode, the Beeb) unhappy with the credits, was there a copyright issue involved or were they simply reducing the running time? Or was it just too damn scary?!

I see somebody posted a link to the full 90 mins edition but the site is down at the mo. I'll try that again later, but if anyone's got any other info or even just remembers what I'm talking about then please let me know.

I watched my VHS copy of The Fear Of God last night (74mins) but I'm sure there are still some bits that have been removed. I'm almost 100% positive that Mercedes McCambridge was interviewed whilst she sat in a theater seat and she spoke about the whiskey & raw eggs ect. Anybody else remember it? Or am I going crazy!!!???

  • Gavvo-76

Hi Lindsay, the version I have on the UK special edition VHS starts with Eileen's “Howdy' make-up and other shots leading to the titles you mentioned.

It simply has to be said that the 1/12 of a second that Captain Howdy appears onscreen is amongst the most jarring of moments ever filmed.
