My explanation goes like this (and feel free to accept it)…
1947 (or if you prefer E:TB as your Exorcist prequel, 1949). Merrin leaves Kenya for Rome, having returned to the fold he’d abandoned three years earlier under tragic circumstances. He gave his report. Not only did his colleagues buy it, the precise location of the exorcism caught their interest: In Africa, a buried, pristine, Byzantine church. And with his fame as an archaeologist and author, and now having driven out a demon — The Devil Himself — a legend was born and made its way accross the Atlantic eventually becoming a bigger and more incredible story. What was just a night-long exorcism, if that, became “months.”
As much as I’d have liked to have seen a months-long exorcism, it’s kind of more realistic and validates Dominion since it DOESN’T match up. The official’s account was not a solid one. He wasn’t sure of all the details (notice when he talks, he’s guessing; he’s got the basic story), so he gave a guess. Lots of legends change over time, and this was one.

Saw 1 was to Saw 2 what Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist was to Exorcist The Beginning. Or it that a bit harsh? Anyway, Saw 1 was more psychological than “scary”, which Saw 2 beat its predessor at being. Let’s face it. 🙂

Linda Blair seems like a nice lady. But her beauty now pales in comparison to Ellen Burstyn’s (circa 1973; pre-Heretic Kitty Wynn, too, not that we’re talking The Women of the Exorcist), if you ask me. Heck, and even if you don’t.
Linda Blair CAN act, and act well, in The Exorcist. But after that, all she seems to me to have going for her is her friendly, respectful personality*.

Constantine and Hellboy are interchangable in so many ways, incidentally. Now their comic book roots, on the other hand… dynomite and memorable!

The peeps I threw out as possibilities to me seemed the most worthy of portraying the Karras character.
Karras, the actor portraying him, must have taken a beating in life, but withstood it to press on. Karras might be a kindly priest, but he’s been to Hell and back (not literally, but you get the idea, right?). His worldly and spiritual problems, must’ve taken years off his life, and then he’s asked to intervene in a case of possession, and does so, because he genuinely wants to help, despite his weariness. That, to me, is what Karras is all about.
Anyway, an actor ought to be somebody with a beaten-looking face and demeanor, but have a real heart. A tough guy with a heart that’s tougher.

I’d always thought American kids could have gotten their Halloween costumes in early October. At least these days, costumes and things for any number of Holidays are put out for sales weeks or months in advance. I used to toil at Target and we had Halloween costumes eons before the big day.
Anyway, the kids in the film might just be enjoying their new costumes. The bigger question might be: “Do the leaves fall like that in Georgetown way back in EARLY October…?” 🙂

A film on — and a ‘nother prequel to The Exorcist, incidentally)– Karras would naturally be an interesting thing.
But since it couldn’t involve demons, exorcisms, etc. it could be tricky to pull off with any kind of originality or scenes of real drama. Maybe not. Anyway, I think if there were such a film to be made, God and/or angels would be a MUST. Otherwise it would be a very stand-alone story even further from the original film than Dominion or Legion are perceived to be. Such a film would be a fine opporunity to realy explore the “GOOD” — to some degree — and if they opted to get supernatural about it, to a significant degree, it’s the good guys (God and angels) who oughtta appear. And not some kind of Touched By an Angel hooey, either, please.
Oh, and BLATTY would have to write it. Otherwise, since the rights belong to a certain meddling production company, it’d have an exorcism in it at the end. Blatty know’s better, and knows his characters better than anyone.
Not counting the man’s proper version of Legion (pre-Morgan Creek’s tampering), If Blatty has one more film in him, given his “up there” age, I hope “KARRAS” is it.

Ps. I’d get Jason Patric to play Karras. Or an unknown. If I had such power to choose.
My favorite two scenes in the film, though are:
“The message” and cutting to the taxi pulling up with Regan in close-up, possessed.
The “MERRRRIN!” scene when Merrin has arrived at the house.
And the reveal of the Pazuzu statue with Merrin gulping in shock and wind and sun actin’ all crazy.
I also adore the “face off” with the Pazuzu statue, barking dogs, and Merrin pondering. Classic.
What a fine film.

A lot of it is truly impossible to shake. Some of it, however, like who the caterer(s) of the production was, or whatnot, forget it — no interest there. Zero. Zip. Zilch. 😐

Anyway, look, buddy, I’ve already got a psychitrist; you’re not squeezin’ any money outta me! 😀
Besides, I look deeply into things, or not at all; sometimes there’s nothing to find or learn, sure, but many times there is, and it’s things which would not have otherwise possibly (nay, probably) come to be revealed and discussed, whether we like ’em or not. Ya gotta look beyond the obvious sometimes, and one way to do that is to look deeper, speculate, and use one’s brain. On the other hand, if you’re Superman, don’t look too deep; you could
