I have to say this whole thing sounds like a sorry episode from the George Lucas school of writing.
I'm really not much of a fan of revisionism to classic works, however well intentioned. If the novel has stood as well as it has for 40 odd years why on earth mess with it other than for vanity?
Authors and Auteurs are very often their own worst enemies.
I'll reserve judgement until I read the thing but it will be with no small amount of trepidation.
I honestly did not find any of the changes (which I can't find a list of….anyone?) to be a distraction or diversion from the original. The book “seemed” to flow better but that might be my bias, knowing there were changes to grammar, sentence structure etc.

ParticipantI thought the scene was chilling and it was apparent to me at least that this character was not who he said he was. He was disheveled, food stained etc.
Â
The only thing that took me back was Karras finding the cigarette butt after he wakes up! I first thought…”oh, it was a dream” but then the butt….now I am not sure one way or the other.
Â
I wonder if anyone has a list of the changes Blatty made to this anniversary addition? I can't find them anywhere.

Thanks

ParticipantThe Exorcist is the morst visceral of any films I have ever seen. It affected my skin and scalp the first time I watched it.
I reflected on it for several days after I first watched it. I have to be honest, the scene that most affected me was when the recording of Regan's demon voice is replayed on tape….it truly scared me as in I stayed awake after I turned out the lights and looked around the room frightened till dawn.
Â
It has a special place in my heart but no other film has matched it's affect on my psychy.

Honestly, I wasn't that scared when I watched it the first time, but every time after that, it gets scarier.
I find the opposite actually.

ParticipantI think the reason younger generations do not find the movie as frightening is complicated. If I were to whittle it down I would say it has to do with familiarity and time.
Â
Movies that succeeded The Exorcist and copied it diluted the horror of the original to some extent. A lot of time has passed since it release and I certainly think many kids have heard about it in some fashion.
Â
I do agree with those who point out that this is a slow to build movie (which I love and contributes to the suspense) but which in turn can turn off a younger crowd. Personally, I find this a sad commentary on our up and coming adults.
Â
I also think there is something to be said for the general decline of belief in the supernatural or at least the kind seen in the film. If you actually believe in the Devil or heaven and hell, The Exorcist would be more frightening imo.

This is a video of the demon speaking in reverse but presented as normal.
Â
When it says “It is warm in the body” my hair stood up….yikes that is freaky even though I've been aware of what was being said for
many years….seeing it like this was cool.

Ok this sucks.
Clearly this is one of the most interesinting discussions for a while and I can't join in cause the video is down lol
Can some good kind person re-upload it please, I'm dying to see it 🙂
I did a youtube search for exorcist and lynda blair talking etc and found another video of what appears to be the same thing.
Â
I also found one quite easily with both voices overdubbed, separated slightly. good stuff.
Â
The voice over definitely is superior of course and I found it one of the more creepy things about the movie. especially coming out of a twelve year olds mouth.

ParticipantI accepted the time line of “months” in the sense that the exorcism would fluctuate in its effectiveness. Some good days and some bad days. Taking some breaks due to many factors etc.
To me it was meant to illustrate the difficulty in removing a supernatural being who didn’t want to leave.

ParticipantI am very stoked to get my hands on this release as are we all. I pre ordered as soon as it became available on Amazon.
I think that many fans here will be seeing this blu ray and thinking of the first time they saw it in the theater. It will be epic. Blu ray releases of old favorites of mine have almost always revealed more about the film then I remembered.
It looks like the transfer is being done well……crosses fingers

ParticipantIf you head over to Rotten Tomatoes every so often you will find a few critics who throw a thumbs down on some of the greatest movies ever made.
Now, I’ll be the first to admit that not every movie is going to appeal to everyone. but….
….The OP provides a list by EW, which in my opinion does not explore any rationale for their decision. At least good critics will tell you why, in detail, they don’t like some movies.
Let’s remember that The Exorcist still is considered by many to STILL be the scariest movie ever made. By many critics as well. I can’t think of one movie that has that distinction for this long.

ParticipantI like your analysis, Sofia but I must confess I never suspected Karras.
The hints must be subtle or I’m just not that observant ( most likely the latter 🙂 )

ParticipantHello, ABGirl
Thanks for the welcome and interesting post!
I have never had any knowledge or known anyone who was thought to be possessed. Your story is intriguing!
I always saw the mystery of who killed Dennings being strongly suggested towards Regan of course but the hedging by Kinderman was due to his inability to come to terms with this being a psychiatric problem let alone a demonic one.
I have to be honest. I never finished the movie or book with the thought that Karras would be the scapegoat for Dennings murder. I must have missed something?
cheers
