ParticipantJust,
Looks like a dead end link. But, I know what you mean.

ParticipantOh, good. This is the 20 Questions Game Show! 🙂
“Is it a pop-up version of The Exorcist?”

ParticipantHi Sof!
Laughs. 🙂 That was an off-the-cuff or “blink” thought about Regan “coming to from a Pazuzu coma” and then being terrified at where she was and what she’d done. Or perhaps the demon had intentions for the crucifix as witnessed during the masturbation scene.
I always thought Karl placed the crucifix under Regan’s pillow in the film because he doesn’t reply straight away. Instead he asks Chris, “She is going to be well?” When Chris asks him again, he replies, “No. It wasn’t me. I didn’t.”
If not, it’s one of those nuns when we see in the white habits during Chris’ walk home after filming Crash Course. 😉

ParticipantGet2Me, are you referring to the pic posted by CamelWide on Blu-ray.com? If you are, I think WB is trying to mix it up with the advertising by using the 1973 original poster and listing Extended Director’s Cut & Original Theatrical Version in reverse. Just a marketing game probably just like swapping names from TVYNS to the Extended Director’s Cut that may sound more intriguing to buyers.
I’m just glad they included the original as well instead of just the God-awful TVYNS with all the CGI crap (including the blood pouring from Regan’s mouth at the finale of the spiderwalk). I do think if WB spent the right amount of time on the original, they will cover up mistakes such as the wires and the makeup/vomit tube apparatus mistake on Dietz.
Thanks to CamelWide for posting this link from BD.com.
Cap, are you going to put a countdown timer on here for the release date? I think you did that one other time for something else, but I can’t remember for what. This is going to be a big deal for us Blu-ray-ophiles!

ParticipantAnd, if we’re not terrified enough, the box set of Aliens and Psycho will hit about the same time. What a great Halloween this will be!

ParticipantHmmm … novel or film?

ParticipantFather Merrin,
I think your point is true about “the rules of demonic possession.” Yes, Blatty wrote something original while Friedkin directed something unique using a non-intrusive documentary style, although ever so slightly.
When films like The Blair Witch Project and The Exorcist combine, the thinking is not original nor is it unique. Looking back over films with very different spins, such as Rosemary’s Baby (pre-The Exorcist) and The Omen (post-The Exorcist), both of these films championed very different and creative perspectives involving the devil.
By comparison, The Sixth Sense and The Others had some similarities, particularly the shocker endings. Both films, in my eyes, are winners. Thus, I believe a newly original possession/exorcism film can raise the devil in new ways.

ParticipantOh, yeah. The synchronizer … you mean the lightbulb with tin foil that makes that obnoxious humming noise. That was so believable and frightening!

ParticipantTime will tell how much this movie will fall short of the champ!

ParticipantThanks, Steve. I hope those weren’t the “best of the best” scenes combined into one. I was anticipating more because of who is involved, but hopefully it has a great horror story.
We’ll see … in time. In time.

ParticipantThe assumption is that Regan (while possessed) went downstairs to retrieve the crucifix. There are no duplicates. In fact, it is mystery as to who owned the crucifix … was it Karl’s, Willie’s, Sharon’s … or did Regan take a crucifix from Dalgren Chapel when she descecrated the statue of Mother Mary?

ParticipantOh, since this topic is about III, I laughed my ass off with the rest of the audience when the old lady was crawling on the ceiling. Plus, picking George C. Scott as the detective just ruined the film. He way overacted just like Rod Steiger did in The Amityville Horror. In fact, I couldn’t pick which one deserved the Worst Acting Award on Earth … perhaps both. It’s really a shame because both were brilliant actors who took the payoffs just for their names.
III went through too many name titles and too many ways of trying to market it. If WB execs left Blatty alone, it would have been a halfway decent film.

ParticipantWhen I first read about this, I saw LionsGate would be participating. This means they have the funding for great marketing for The Last Exorcism (originally entitled, Cotton). Eli Roth, (Hostel I & II ) and Zack Snyder (Dawn of the Dead) are producing. Daniel Stamm is directing and he will implore the same realistic look and feel (ala The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity) to this film just as he did in his 2008, A Necessary Death. All make for something to wonder about until it hits the theaters.
The release date is set for August 27, 2010 in the U.S. Don’t gauge the film too much on the photos or even the trailer when it becomes available. The Exorcism of Emily Rose looked to be a hopeful contender to The Exorcist due mainly in part to its heavily marketed “based on a true story” aspect (actually it was too loosely based on the German account of the exorcism and subsequent death of Anneliese Michel). It tanked at the box office and critics and audiences panned it (although my friend Jennifer Carpenter rocked in the role as Emily).
If The Last Exorcism combines some of the aspects of Paranormal Activity and The Exorcist, it may work. Borrowing from these films means using the Paranormal Activity camera movements (from the “real” crew filming the events – see below) and providing creatively and intermittent believable moments of shock value like The Exorcist.
Plot:
“After a career spent helping the devout through prayer and trickery, Reverend Cotton Marcus (Patrick Fabian) invites a film crew to document his final fraudulent days as an exorcist. Soon his faith is truly tested when a desperate plea from the father of a possessed girl (Ashley Bell) brings him face to face with the devil himself.â€In time. In time.
