I must be missing the obvious, but exactly whose signature is on the DVD?

Harper & Row … William Peter Blatty gets royalties.  However, I very seriously doubt you will get permission to do any type of adaptation to this classic on any level.

    Bill,

Both films went on to win Academy Awards and both films broke box office records. In fact, both films surpassed The Exorcist in terms of monetary gross and critical acclaim. Audiences have voted both films as all-time favorites.

Yeah, probably some viewers thought that “Dennings” was trying to suggest to Chris that Rags had done some kind of nasty, deliberate sexual stuff, whereas the plain meaning is that the demon is confirming what Chris just heard from Kinderman – “Regan/your c.nting daughter murdered me, just like you are seeing, by turning my head completely around, facing backwards”…

That's my own thoughts, too. It is the tie and the revelation that ultimately breaks Chris's denial of the spiritual/supernatural that doctors posed to her in the conference room about possession. Chris rejected the possibility and pulled Regan out of the Barringer Clinic. While this could be related to Chris's aetheism, however, I think most would do the same regardless of religious beliefs. It was insane … yet it was true … especially when Burke's voice eminated from Regan. (And it is yet another clever part of Blatty's novel.)

Well no, Sofi, that's the what influenced Friedkin to go back and shorten the film, but not the reason why he specifically took out these scenes.

John Calley said he felt those scenes were too repetitive and then Friedkin agreed! That's the reason he gave for cutting out those scenes.

Sof, I will bet you have an article or clipping on the John Calley/Friedkin issue. Can you share it here?

Agreed! Don't you think the driving force behind the molestation theory is when Dennings speaks through Regan at the end of the crucifix masturbation scene? I believe some folks are taking a way too simple approach about Dennings.

wow…. yes, but, there are a lot of things in this world that cannot be explained by science.

“Those darn “intillectuals” will you get every time. “

    lol…

Well, Father B, you are most certainly on that list of intellectuals too!

    Hugs!

    Hugs back at ya, Sof!

“wow…. yes, but, there are a lot of things in this world that cannot be explained by science.”

That is very true and inspires the creativity in humanity. Sometimes it's very unfortunate that science dispels many beliefs; i.e., the Shroud of Turin. With a Catholic upbringing, I was fascinated with the authenticity of the cloth containing the image of Christ created from His own blood.

The church then gave permission to scientists to prove it was indeed an empirical and conclusive piece of Christian history. Sadly, scientists used carbon dating, 3D imagery, blood typing, and the list goes on. Science insists that it is a forgery perpetrated by a medieval artisan.

However, if we choose to think outside of this scientific box, perhaps that very image on the Shroud is actually real with every intention at the time of creation to challenge our beliefs in the power of God.

Justin, I agree. Many components were cut because of the film's length. Films over two hours were very uncommon in the 70's. WB cared about the quick turnover of audiences just as much as theaters.

“If there is extraordinary evidence for the extraordinary claim that the supernatural exists, then the scientific mindset would concede its existence.”

This is a great summation. Obviously, you and I have studied sciences and religions extensively. Further, this could be a very interesting conversation based on the theories of concrete logic versus abstract thinking.

Hypothesis and theories are exactly what makes life interesting, even from an approach that Blatty took with The Exorcist. Atheism is but one of Blatty's clever ideologies presented in his writings while clinging to the human sides of both religion and science.

What does this mean? Well, think about Chris sitting around the table with the doctors at the Barringer Clinic while being probed about her or her daughter's religious beliefs. That scene expresses two sides of the equation: religion and science. I won't go any further because it is up to the viewer to determine why and how religion played a part in the outcome that led to the scientific suggestion of exorcism as a cure.

Rivera's downfall was the overly hyped 1986 Al Capone vault opening disaster. It could have been a piece of historical precedence, but Rivera blew it on live television. This is of course when Rivera had the pull to the get job at ABC.
