Participant I think it was the ouija board, she obviously was talking to an entity using the spirit board. I don't believe in the devil but I do believe in demons and I don't want a ouija board in my house. I'm skeptical about the stories of people playing with these boards without knowing what were they doing and ending traumatised but to be sure I will not touch a ouija board in my life.Â

ParticipantThe Ouija Board certainly appears to be an option. However, the film never really specifies it as a the actual cause of Regan's possession, but only a vehicle for Pazuzu to befriend Regan. In TVYNS, the film reveals another option that may ring more true:
KARRAS
Why this girl? It makes no sense?MERRIN
I think the point is to make us dispair. To see ourselves
as animal and ugly … to reject the possibillity that God
could love us.Father Bowdern

ParticipantAnother possibility could be because of Regan's disposition in the story.
Â
Her mom is an actress, and although she tries to give Rags as much attention as she can, she does have a successful and very busy movie career that often takes her away from Regan. Also consider the divorce of her parents, and her feelings in the matter. Feelings of neglect, guilt, self-persecution….things that could leave her psyche, and perhaps her spirit vulnerable to invasion.
Â
One person had done a review of The Exorcist, stating that it was an allegory for child abuse/neglect.
Certainly, her fooling around with the Ouija board was a catalyst that further advanced the onset of possession, in concert with the feelings I described above.Â
Again….just another possibility. 🙂

ParticipantMaybe  a bit of everything contributed to the possession. Mental instability, messing  around with the occult and all that made her will weak and easy for the demon to possess her

ParticipantRegan's possession could come from a lot of different things, but mainly I believe Pazuzu projected the outcomes based the location. Father Karras and then the diocese had a direct connection to his nemesis, Father Merrin. Thus, the ongoing battle between Pazuzu and Karras was very well orchestrated from the onset by the demon. Originally, Pazuzu lost his battle in Northern Iraq and successfully won in D.C. against Merrin. Regan and Karras were just innocent bystanders and ultimately stems of institigation to achieve Pazuzu's triumphant victory over Merrin.

ParticipantI think Pazuzu did it just for the hell of it.

ParticipantMary Jo said to Chris that dabbling with ouija boards and the occult always seem to point to the opening of a door of some sort.
