Unfortunately, the wires are still there after all the digital processing and the time it took to get the BR out to market. I've written a couple of times on this forum that its a real shame that WB did not take the time to remove those wires. MGM cleaned up the Wizard of Oz and completely removed the Cowardly Lion's tail wires which took much longer than the approximate ten minutes or less that we see Regan levitating.

It is a shame they didn't take the time to remove the wires, but honestly, unless I really look for them, I still don't see them in that scene. It's not like they 'pop' or anything. The effect is still really well done. I guess it's in-keeping with everything else in the Exorcist being achieved with practical effects.

I agree. That's why I don't look at the upper part of the screen! I think the CGI was in production for over two years?

I thought so to. I think it was up too Friedkin to remove the wires. I'm kinda torn if they should or shouldn't have.

In fairness, WB, Friedkin, Blatty could have insisted the wires be removed to add more of a supernatural effect. For individuals who know about the wires, it's a bummer seeing them on the revered blu-ray.

Heh, wait until The Black Hole hits blu-ray.  (If anyone here is familiar with that movie–Disney's first PG rated film). 

In that movie, suspension wires were all too visible.   They'll really stand out on blu-ray if they aren't digitally removed.

I tried looking for the wires on the Blu-ray and they weren't very noticeable to me. Actually, I don't think I was able to see them (it's been a while since I've seen the film in it's entirety).

 

I thought that the effects were VERY well-done. It's cool how the special effects guy painted the wires with very small black and white dots. I never would have thought about doing that if I were in his position. It's even more clever when you think that the pattern he painted blends with the film's natural grain.

 

The only special effects that I hated are the ones from the director's cut. I don't like the effects that Friedkin added to Regan's face when she's sitting in the chair during the hypnotism session. And the added subliminal images take away from the film. They become distracting, as opposed to the original subliminal images from the film, which I thought added to the tense/frightening feeling the film carries.
