I only read the novel once, many years ago, and vaguely remember if it makes any mention of this, but during the scene in which the psychologist has Regan hypnotized, and Regan's demon comes forth on demand, Chris kinda reels back, covering her mouth as if she's about to hurl…as if there was a foul stench in the room.  If that was the case, what stench was that in particular?  Urination? Defecation? Demonic halitosis?

Like I said, I vaguely remember if it was covered in this scene in the novelization. 🙂
Bad odors manifest the victim through the demon, such as sulphur or rotting meat/fish. I don't recall if Blatty wrote about the actual smell other than it is am overwhelming, foul-smelling stench. Basically, Regan smelled like shit.Â

The novel also describes Karras walking into Regan's bedroom for the first time, the stench in the room was so awful, it was like a blast of foul odor that hit him as he walked through the door. Karras' eyes watered, and he had to hold his breath, the smell was so bad.
There was no indication of this in the movie, though. Karras just walked in. The part in the book where possessed Regan takes a dump in her diapers wasn't in the movie either, but that's probably for the best. It may have been unintentionally funny, seeing Regan screwing up her face and you hear a muffled “fffuh” defecating sound!

LOL! Apologies if this was a slightly uncomfortable subject, Ceru. :) It had been so long since I'd read the novel…the only thing that really stuck with me in the novel was the spiderwalk/tongue flick scene (half of which was restored for TVYNS).
I always thought, since the scene involves Regan opening her mouth wide as Captain Howdy makes his appearance, that the stench was emanating from her mouth – I suppose demonic halitosis. Â Wasn't this mentioned in the novel, as well?
