In the scene when Regan starts speaking backwards, which turns out to be in English, Linda’s lips actually match up to Mercedes’ voice. I think they had Linda writhe around saying the bits: “He’s a priest… I am no one!” and then they played the footage back so both Linda’s lips and Mercedes vocals played backwards over her voice, looked the same.
This might be a “well duh,” response, but it just occurred to me that Linda just wasnt there saying jargon that would be fixed later with the dub over.
Not so sure about that one because McCambridge was hired after the scene was shot. Although, the voices could have been recorded and Blair had to learn to mouth what she heard on a tape. Much like lip-syncing only much, much harder. But, hey, she was 14 and had a lot of time on her hands while sitting the makeup chair for about three hours a day.
No, what I mean is, Mercedes was reading from the script that Linda was performing from. Linda said what Mercedes said in English in the playback.
Linda said: “He’s a priest! Let her die! I am no one…” when the scene was shot.
Mercedes said that same dialogue.
Mercedes’ voice was played backwards for the scene with Linda. The film of Linda saying the words in English, was then played backwards, so Mercedes and Linda are actually saying the same dialogue but both are being played in reverse, so their lips match up.
I hope someone understands me.
Um, for us dummies out there, I mean the few of us that might not know, what do you mean “matches the scene at the Georgetown U when Karras is studying it”?
The scene is the one in which Karras has taken the recording he made at the McNeil household of Regan speaking backward after he “sprankle” holy water on her (the demon). Karras then closely listens and studies the difference voices while he is in the language lab at Georgetown U. This is the scene in which he is asking for a professor’s assistance in determining what language it is. The professor states, “It English alright.” Karras responds, “What do you mean it’s English?” The professor turns the tape recorder back on and plays the tape in reverse order and right after he says, “It’s English in reverse. Listen.”
“She also says, “It is warm in the body” & “I see you”
Is this in the film? I went back and didn’t hear it.
You have to record & play the part backwards yourself, the actual part where she speaks in reverse, immediately following the sprinkling of the holy water, in order to hear it. It is not heard when they are in the sound lab listening to the tape. Do this if you can, its completely worth it and downright disturbing. Enjoy!
I got you howdy first time out of the gate and your second comment does make sense. However, the voices are all different … they not McCabridge’s voice only. In fact, they had actor Mason Curry as one of the voices in that scene along with actor Ron Faber … both are uncredited. Also, I read somewhere that a technician (broad sense) working on the film did a voice in that scene as well.
I do think you may be on to something with that scene being filmed and then reversed. The reason that it makes sense is because they used that same effect to create the “Help Me” on Regan’s stomach that rises by using paint thinner and a hair dryer (paint thinner makes latex expand and the hair dryer makes it return to its original shape).
This scene does intrigue me because I would love to see if what is being said in that scene matches the scene at the Georgetown U when Karras is studying it. I have Adobe Soundbooth CS, so maybe I’ll get around to that one day … for fun! 😉
