ParticipantHi All,
Will post pics at the famous house and its steps when I find a media hosting site today or this week (suggestions welcomed since my last site went defunct).
Oddly, the owners had their privacy gate open so I could take pics of the courtyard. It was perfect timing because they never leave it open but it’s a nice quiet day with very little traffic and tourists. Next month (October) it will resume to the normal craziness I’m sure.

ParticipantThanks Justin! I'll try to upload later this week.
I had a blast. For once, that rotten black gate was open that so many people find in pics of on the internet and on Google Earth. I think the owners we expecting a package from USPS, UPS, etc. Over the years, the tenants have modified the courtyard but the original entrance from the film is still intact.
When you are standing in front of the house, you realize just how narrow the street really is and that most shots occurred across the street that is diagonal to the house. The perspective is so different from the film in terms of how the faux exterior façade (Regan's bedroom, etc.) truly must have been in relation to the yard and the Hitchcock steps (which I have no intentions of climbing again). 🙂
Rambling night with no clear thoughts … posting soon.

Thanks, Jagged. I hope you get the chance, too. Georgetown and DC and in general is quite nice. I drove and parking is the biggest nightmare, but I got lucky because people had left for work and I “borrowed” their parking spot. 🙂

ParticipantI’ve talked to the current owners a few times — very nice people. The gate is actually open more often than one would expect.

I'm curious. I assume they knew what the house was before they bought it. Do they find the attention amusing or annoying?

I have heard the lady that owned the Nightmare on Elm Street house was very friendly and even had the door painted red to look lie the later movies. She recently sold it though and the new owners have been altering it to look different.

ParticipantThey seem very non-plussed, honestly. I had to explain to them that a facade was built onto the house for the film. To them it’s just an awesome house with an incredible view of Key Bridge and the Potomac.
(As an aside, I was crossing the bridge last week, and you get a good view of the house and the University up on the cliff. I noticed that 3600’s attached neighbor has a huge FOR SALE banner up. Anyone looking to buy a house in Georgetown could start there.)
But I think EXORCIST fans would be surprised to learn how little the people of Georgetown seem to regard the “importance” of the location in regards to how enthusiasts perceive it. The house barely gets a glance, and the stairs are merely a means of getting to and from M Street (or an exercise routine for the large population of joggers and athletes).

Participantekm,
I'm glad the new owners keep the gate open more often because that horrible black fence is so out of place in that neighborhood. I noticed in the Blatty/Friedkin spot that Captain Howdy published recently that the gate was indeed open (and then closed again in other shots). I'm sure these folks probably use their car regularly and receive packages like everyone else and just leave the gate open because they haven't had any of the problems/issues that previous owners experienced decades ago.
The only real “personal” thing that I noticed was an opened window with a houseplant sitting on a table. Nothing special to others, but fascinating to me as a fan. I would loved to have pressed the front doorbell and ask for a tour even if it really had nothing to do with the film. Have you seen the inside, ekm?

Ahh, I was hoping you got further than I did. The planter boxes are a unique touch the new owners added though.

ParticipantI was just there last week. Got some similar shots. I used to live in suburban Maryland and would visit Gtown quite often.

By the way, several of your photos turned out as red X's or empty squares. Is that my computer screwing up?
