Bringing William Peter Blatty’s The Exorcist to the stage takes some courage. Not only is the novel a timeless best-seller, but the film that followed is revered as one of the greatest, and officially remains the highest grossing, horror films of all time. As I’ve previously posted, The Exorcist stage play will run from July 3 to August 12, 2012, at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles, and is directed by John Doyle. It promises to be unmissable.

The Geffen Playhouse website recently released an official blurb and promotional image as publicity slowly starts to roll out for the event.

The most chilling test of faith come to life on stage.  This world premiere adaptation of the famous 1971 novel documenting the terror and redemption of a ten-year-old girl remains as frightening and relevant as when first experienced. Under the direction of Tony Award winner John Doyle and adapted by acclaimed playwright John Pielmeier (Agnes of God), The Exorcist transforms the unsettling battles of good versus evil, faith versus fact and ego versus ethos into a uniquely theatrical experience as sophisticated as it is suspenseful.

I like this image of Regan in her nightgown and the monstrous shadow of the demon (Pazuzu?) behind her. It smacks of the right amount of ‘creepy’ this play seems to be offering, as apposed to the blood and violence that so often is the focus on what is otherwise a perfect drama about the test of a man’s faith.

I only wish I could get along to see this when it opens.

I really want to go but in order to see “The Exorcist”, you have to subscribe to at least 2 other plays. That brings it up to around $185.00 for all three. I have zero interest in the other 2 plays so it looks like I will be taking a pass on it.

Single seat tickets went on sale today and I got mine. Some additional news straight from the horses mouth last night.

The play isn’t fully cast yet and they weren’t ready for announcements just yet. It looks like there will only be one set and it will take place in a church. They said there will be minimal special effects. The screenplay is based on the book and with Blatty’s blessing he riffed on some of the things that are only mentioned in passing. The one example he mentioned was Chris’s first child that died will be expanded upon in the play.

That’s all I remember at the moment. Mr. Friekin said he is excited to see what they do with it and gave props to the director and music composer.
