I was old enough to see this on the comic display way back then. It's awful that I couldn't buy it, but my parents ruled (although my dad took me to the film when I was a kid). Go figure.

Yes. You paid fair market value.

Jagged, you jogged my memory about the painting because WB had fits over anything except the levitation scene which aired often on talk shows and news programs. That was the only thing you could see … Regan's body in a side shot and no more. The face was the factor to the illusion. Today, WB wouldn't have a chance at keeping stills and even videos off the net.

Father Bowdern

WB cared a lot. They wanted that mystique and word-of-mouth about “that thing upstairs.” The whole concept that Dick Smith created was much than a monster. It was a great marketing tool that worked very effectively. On another note, Steven Spielberg guarded the sets during the filming of Close Encounters because he didn't want the press to publish how they worked or what they looked like. It was a success and so was his film, of course.

Let's see, I was the same age that Linda Blair was portraying in film! My dad (a non-Catholic) took me to see it, while my mother (Irish Catholic) refused to go based on that “word-of-mouth” thing I mentioned above. At the age of 12, the only things I remembered specifically from that viewing is the crucifix scene, projectile vomiting, “that thing upstairs” face, and the horrific voice coming from a sick little girl's mouth. My mother raised her children as Catholic, so I could very easily associate with some facets of the film.

I saw it when I was five (because I somehow managed to drag my parents to see it).   For many years, I regretted it.  LOL!

LOL!  Believe me, I had no earthly idea what I was getting into. 🙂
