ParticipantThe Original 1973 or TVYNS? Im a little confused, because you know that I love both versions of the film. Each were special in their own special way. But which one would appeal most to someone who is of this generation? can you help me out?!

ParticipantFor those that have never seen either….I would recommend the original. I've always loved Friedkin's orginal masterpiece much more than “The Version You've Never Seen.”

ParticipantI say go with your gut instinct.  Me, I usually show my friends TVYNS. I love both versions, but TVYNS definitely upped the scale for me in freakiness.  Sometimes, though, I will watch the original with my friends, just to show them how freaky the original was without the enhancements.

ParticipantThe original. Watching TVYNS first is a mistake and could diminish your experience of the original.

ParticipantI'm not really sure that watching TVYNS first would actually diminish the enjoyment of the original. Fr. Bowdern and I talked about this before….and it's not beyond the realm of possibility that someone who'd seen TVYNS first would still find the original untouched version superior. 🙂

But, one's actual mileage may vary.Â

I can certainly agree that one SHOULD see the original version first, because my experience was….I saw the original when I was a kid back in '73.  It scared the hell out of me for a long time.  And just when I thought I'd conquered it, along came TVYNS to up the scary factor again…and I had to reconquer it all over again. 🙂

ParticipantI still think the enhanced sound in TVYNS makes the movie scarier. For example, during the “fuck me” scene. When Regan is having the “seizure” before she gets fully possessed for the first time. The enhanced sounds make it sound like the demon is VIOLENTLEY thrashing her around. And the sounds that Regan makes when she is possessed, sounds 10 times more demonic in TVYNS. And the crucifix scene, its more like a stabbing sound than the squish in the original version. And when the devil's face appears during the hypnosis scene…. so awesome..

Im NOT knocking the original 1973 in any way shape or form. Remember that

Participantfraroc, I think you've answered your own question by fleshing it out here. I'm not sure what “of this generation” truly means in your eyes; e.g., prepubescent, pubescent, young adulthood 18+, early adulthood 21+. You seem to have a pretty good handle on this according to the sound effects you enjoy from TVYNS.
Steve and I were just lucky (okay, old enough) that we were around to get the visceral shock from the original version in theaters. The original film was the first time in cinematic history that any film in this league appeared on the silver screen from any country. To me,  TVYNS implores too much CGI that cheapens the original film too dramatically. Again, it’s just my opinion.
So why don’t you show the original and then TVYNS. If you have both on blu-ray, the viewing order makes perfect sense and your friends can make a true comparison for themselves.

ParticipantI agree. If you have both of these on Blu-Ray…show them in chronological order…original first, then TVYNS. The picture quality for both, I'm sure, is stunning. 🙂
