Actually, you may recall that the scene starts out with the possessed Regan saying “What an excellent day for an exorcism” and it is to that statement that Karras asks “Wouldn’t that make you leave Regan?”

As for the “You and us” remark, it’s far better explained in the novel, but the demon can read minds. That’s how the demon knew about the beggar who asked Karras if he could help “an old alter boy, faddah?”, how it knew about Karras being a priest even though he wasn’t wearing any of his priestly garments, et. al.

It’s more than likely that the demon knew that Karras was having a crisis of faith- compare its attitude with Karras to that of when Merrin commands “BE SILENT!”. At any rate, the demon was trying to instill fear in Karras.

Hmmmm….interesting, I have always thought that homeless man on the subway was possessed by Pazuzu and thus perhaps explains the demons voice of the bum when Father Karras visited Regan.

Interesting theory Holy7. Can the demon possess more than one person at a time? If so, why did it leave Regan to possess Karras?

Because Father Karras asked for Pazuzu to come into him and possess his body.

I’ll review to make sure, but, that subway scene with the bum is before Pazuzu began/completed his possession of Regan.

Well it was definitely before he completed it, but not before it began. Does these mean that the demon can keep more than one person in the obsession stage at a time but only one fully possessed? Interesting analysis.

    Holy7,

    Father Merrin/Father Karras:

Karras: I think I should tell you about the different personalities that have manifested …

    Merrin: There is only one.

He was most definitely mocking Karras. I agree with Paul, that scene and others is explained much better in the novel, where the demon had much, much more character development. The demon had personal knowledge of each person in the house, and played it against them. ie: He knew that Sharon fantasized about Karras, and told him when she was in the room. He knew about Willie and Karl’s junkie daughter in Harlem… And yes, he knew of Karras’ crisis of faith – He knew all their weaknesses, and used it against them.
