ParticipantShe never said it smelled like burning in the movie. 🙁
In the book, the doctor gives a rational explanation as to why Regan said that. He asked Chris if her daughter had been seeing things or smelling things, and Chris said she kept smelling something bad in her bedroom. Then the doctor knew it was the smell of something burning! I said to myself, “Wait a sec, how did he know? Is Regan possessed or not?” 😉 Ohhh, it’s the best book ever!!

ParticipantThere’s a passage in the book about the 3 stages of possession, and the odd smell, rappings in the environment, etc. is supposed to be the first stage – infestation.

KeymasterBad smells in an area where a possession is taking place signals the early stages of possession, I believe.

ParticipantYep, and they are called, “phantom smells.” Which only goes along with more mystery in the novel. Brain tumor victims also get these smells, so I think the doctor was shooting for it because this passage is prior to Regan going through all the gray-matter tests! 🙂

ParticipantAre phantom smells only sensed by the person being possessed or everyone? It could be tangible evidence of “supernatural” but only if its smelled by more than one witness. Also, smells are caused by chemicals in the air called esters. If the smell was of something real an air sample could had been collected and analysed to determine the source of the odour.

ParticipantNo. Chris distictly didn’t smell it but said she did so as to not upset Regan.
Later though when Karras is interviewing the demon, he get’s a distinct smell of sauerkraut….

ParticipantIn the book and movie when Reagen always said that something smelled like burning in her room, what caused her to say that?? I mean what did that mean and what was Pazuzu doing to her to say that?

ParticipantTrue … and lest we forget the wonderful foul odor in the room when Regan is being hypnotized. All that gagging that Chris does and the covering of her mouth meant something, right? I do remember reading the sauerkraut line. I think it’s when Karras walks into the room and the demon is doing his mind-reading tricks and knows that Karras smells something foul. The demon says, “It smells like sauerkraut, doesn’t it.” (Only our wonderful Sofia would know the exact words! 🙂
