ParticipantI wrote it in a haze… of… jelly beans. What do you want from me? 😛

ParticipantGood points, my friend. Sorry to have misunderstood your meaning for a fixation. Anyway, I guess the truth is, I thought highly of Mann’s portrayal of Francis, and neglected to appreciate the possibility that others did not. Fair enough. Glad you’re here to discuss the film and films in this series we so admire at CaptainHowdy.com. 🙂

ParticipantGranville, your review of THE HERETIC to fantastic and matches my own sentiments. Thanks for sharing and with such insight! 😀

Ps. Yeah, The Heretic-minus-all-things-Exorcist SHOULD get a sequel, and as soon as possible get pried from this film saga; E:TB should have the same done to it, before or after, so long as it happens. The the true trilogy will remain. Amen.

ParticipantThanks, Cap! And Ghetto! Good ideas. 🙂
Now, if only we can get our hands on MORE, similar, other cut footage and shots… 😉 I know, BIG “if”. 😛

ParticipantKindy,
There are two Exorcist sequels so silly and inconsequential, they — not the original 1973 film — are worth your time and energy doing that particular activity. You see, THE EXORCIST, is such a fine film and whatnot, you should either watch it, paying attention, or you shouln’t even bother.
Okay, but I see what you’re saying — “It was fun/scary, M.I.K.E.” Well, maybe so. But just THINK of the fun and frights you could have when you watch the two films that AREN’T worth your full, undivided attention — the two sequels so inane and unbelievably laugh-begging, teenagers in the audience will run their mouths and annoy everyone else (of course, it won’t detract from the viewing experience in the slightest)! Sigh. Yeah. 🙂
If I ever smoke that something-or-other, I will EASILY choose to leave the original 1973 classic undefiled; it deserves better.
“It’s one to grow on.” 😉

Participant(You’re welcome, Granny.). 🙂
Say, GHETTO, what’s your opinion on the subject of this thread? Curious. 🙂
And any word on your Dominion commentary? Oh, what…? You didn’t get the memo? Yep, you’re doing one! 😛 Pleeeeease…? 😉

ParticipantWow, so everyone likes this image the best? It’s a goodie, huh? 😛
Nah, but seriously, post those which you esteem most highly. It would be nice. Neat, too, quite honestly.

ParticipantI need to re-read this book ASAP! I miss it so; great discussion goin’ on here!
Oh, and here’s a what-if question for ya:
What if Blatty had written/re-written Legion as more faithful (and good) sequel than what it clearly is (a so-so faithful sequel, and only good in parts)? 🙂
Sadly, Blatty’s writing is very hit-or-miss. And Legion was largely miss. 😐

ParticipantAsking Justy. It’s his favorite film, you know. 🙂
But seriously:
1.www.google.com — click “images”
2.I love this format for CH forums. It’s very… clean; simple; no fat requiring trimming. 🙂 My only complaint: no signatures. 🙁

ParticipantI could’ve said anything but “The film sucks; you’re completely right on this one after all,” and you’d totally reject it. Oh well. And “brainwashed”? No more than your not appreciating what you hate (Dominion); I like what I like if it meets my definition of “good” — Dominion did for me, and not for you. Really simple. Anyway…
C’mooon, the most glaring flaw is the special effects. And if you wanna tear apart the acting, Clara Bellar, of all the leads, seemed the most so-so; yes, everyone else did convincingly with the material. Bellar was forgettable here and there, not always, but moreso than others; I don’t have a high opinion of her work in the film, but nor do I have low one. They could have don’t much worse.
But back to your fixation on Mann’s most terrible presence, or whatever it supposedly is… I’d disagree, and say he’s a good actor (in this; haven’t seen his other stuff) who gave the character three dimensions, rooting it reality, and HELPING (the other actors) to elevate the film to something approaching the sobering original; but yes, films are very different. Anyway, anything trying to compete (in a way) with the Friedkin film has a Mission: Impsossible on their hands. E:TB fared much better superficially; lots of nods and cannibalization of scenes to make people go, “Oh, just like the original!”, but the final product was a robot; soulless.
The special effects in Dominion, on the other hand are mediocre (no question), and are so much so they are “glaring”. I’d say E:TB effects are so “good” they’re glaring this message to the viewer: “This film is dependent of awesome computer effects, and it has lots of blood and gore, including instant replays of the Dutch girl getting her head blown off by the nazi officer, which helps the film fit wonderfully with the original Exorcist by Friedkin and Blatty! How can you not see this, audience? We have the perfect prequel — it’s fun and exciting… because Renny Harlin’s directing it! YEE-HAW!” …something like that; it’s like one of those eerie subliminal messages! Yikes! 😮
Anyway, for all the haters of Dominion, instead of singling out the special effects, you choose Mann’s acting. I’ll give you originality, but your reasoning seems emotion-based, not so much objective. You really seem hostile. Negativity is fine, but your brand is a tad much. Oh well. Glad you’re here to discuss the bad with us, if you prefer to avoid the good the film has. Maybe in fact the film is mostly bad, fine, but you neglect to mention the good (unless I missed this).
But in conclusion, yeah, the “glaring” problem — if it is to be limited to one , as it would seem to have to be, since glaring things STAND OUT — instead of being Mann, is the special effects, let’s face it.

ParticipantHAHA. Thanks, guys. 😛 Cool. Yeah, I ask because it just seems moderately different enough, if you can believe it, that it would be more recent. The first sequence, not the statue close-up, anyway. Either way, I know, “So what, M.I.K.E.!” 😛
Justy, but you’re one of the experts. When I don’t know something I seek your wisdom, even before Captain So-and-So’s. 😮
ManInKhakiExorcist
ParticipantNot a fan, but would sooner watch this than the more recent and thoroughly inane “prequel” Renny Harlin directed — FURTHER, as many times as possbile if it meant a definite NO to having to also watch Exorcist: The Beginning.
Hey, when I rain honesty, I pour. 🙂 Thank you for letting me get all this off my chest.

ParticipantYeah, the Africa stuff is the best thing it’s got going for it.
Say, JUSTY, can you edit the entire Africa segments down to one piece of shi– sorry! — footage? I’d like to download just to watch, so that I don’t have to sit through the rest of the film. 😀 THANKS!
