I love it ! And yes there is lots in there thats probably well known to some since a significant portion of the book is a collection of previously published interviews from a variety of different sources. What I really like are the articles that discuss the movie (and the book) in terms of its social impact at the time, the movies pedigree among other horror films of its day and those that preceded it, the commentary on the far reaching discussions it opened up from audiences to film students and scholars all the way up to the Vatican.
Theres also some funny stuff that I bet Friedkin forgot he said like telling a reporter that the levitation scene was not done with wires but by using “magnetic fields” when you can actually see the wires and Owen Roizmen describes in his own interview how they painted the wires out …
I think its a cool book 🙂

I think the close up of the blood was created specifically for TVYNS as a new surprise ending to the scene since so many people had already seen the original footage with the tongue and Reagan chasing Sharon across the floor.
A little more shock and gore.
After the scene had been remastered (color corrected timed etc) it would have been a piece of cake to digitally scab a live action plate of a new face with the blood over the original.

The “rare” part may be that the card is a vintage French movie card. Isn’t the large picture of Reagan’s face actually the spfx puppet used to do the head spinning trick?

I’ve just gotten to a chapter in the Travers book that discusses the realities of possesion, Hunkelers case and the belief that even in the 70’s Fr. John Nicola (advisor on the film and Assist. Dir. of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception) and the Catholic Church that mental illness was usually a more likely suspect for possessed behaviour as opposed to any paranormal or supernatural element. They also make kinda the flip side argument “well then doesn’t that maybe make all mentall ill people possessed?” by recounting a story by a witness at a Maryland asylum during an otherwise peaceful day until a priest shows up and all Hell breaks loose. That I didn’t buy. Religious hysteria I’m sure has a nice home in the minds of some asylum bound people.
I often wondered if Ronald Hunkeler has remained silent all these years because if he were to reveal the truth it would be like the ultimate “Boy who cried Wolf”
Yeah the pic of Linda (with the orange tint to it) is part of the Hospital sequence when we see her talking to herself but hear Ellen Burstyn talkiing with the Doctors, I think …
Thanks for the info! Side note, I just got the Peter Travers “Story Behind The Exorcist” and so far its pretty great with a ton of pics a map of the Gtown location and the text of the ritual for an Exorcism!!!

Although I believe spiritually in a great many things I’m curious too. One of the articles I’ve read was an interview with a man who was at the time of the events (supposedly) Ronalds closest childhood friend and who casts more than a little doubt on the authenticity of the claim of possession.
Still, that doesnt make Blatty’s book or Friedkin’s movie anything less than great 🙂
