ParticipantThe 2010 blu ray discs are exactly the same ones in the 2013 release. The only difference is the artwork change on the cover (which I don't like…I like the original), the little book that comes with it, and the two bonus interviews on the third disc. Warner Bros. basically repackaged what they already released (with no difference in picture clarity), threw in the tiny book and a couple interviews, and charged $40.
The special features on both discs (Extended version and theatrical) are on the 2010 discs too, since they are not new, just repackaged. No new video transfer, nothing.

ParticipantI can only blame myself, but purchasing this 40th edition was a huge mistake. It has to be the biggest repackaging of the same thing I've ever seen. Thankfully, I still have my copies of the 2010 release. At least it has the iconic cover.

ParticipantThanks, Justin! I'm glad I secured my copy when it was only $19.99! What a rip-off!

ParticipantThanks, Jagged. I had seen the 1.77:1 aspect listed on amazon, but I also know those descriptions aren't very reliable often times.

ParticipantForgive my ignorance, guys and girls- I'm not very technical when it comes to film formatting. I was wondering: The 2010 Blu ray is in 1.85:1 ratio, while I see the new one is 1.77:1. Will that make any difference in clarity? Any info you all may have?

ParticipantGood heavens! And all I did was stumble on here for the latest news!
WELL! Say what you will, but I'm NEVER getting rid of my copy of “9 to 5!”

ParticipantCan't argue with that! Lol!

ParticipantThanks, Father B.
I remain that I respect individuals' preferences, but when a movie's cover has been the same for nearly 40 years, it truly is as much a part of the film as the movie itself. When you see the golden arches, you know it's McDonald's. When you see Coca-Cola's brand, it's much the same.
If this movie were, say, “Drowning Mona” or something, almost no one would really care WHAT the cover. This is “The Exorcist,” though, we're talking about. Ask just about anyone on the street what the cover of the film looks like, and they can tell you. It's ingrained in people. I simply feel it takes away a bit of the “bite” of the movie to change something so iconic to a flight of stairs that won't resonate with younger audiences (and many older). At least not heavily. “If it ain't broke, don't fix it,” I say, and will hold on to my “Merrin Arrives” versions as long as they're playable.

ParticipantYou're right. My bad. It's the Australian version of the Blu ray. Check out e-Bay.

ParticipantI would never call anyone on here “stupid,” RMF. No worries.
What I meant by a 3D cover is when you turn it a certain way you see one thing, and when you turn it another, you see something different. That's what I was referencing when I spoke of “The Silence of the Lambs'” dvd cover that came out some years ago. When held in one position, you would see Anthony Hopkins' face. Holding it at a different angle, you'd see Jodie Foster's. It was a “stick on” piece that went on top of the cover, basically.
Everyone's entitled to their opinion, of course! I was simply stating that to me, “The Exorcist” is synonymous with the picture of the light shining on the priest. For almost 40 years, that's been the cover art for the film. I'm a purist when it comes to cover art. That means I simply don't care for when studios change movie covers for the sake of making a buck. Some people see a different cover and are enticed to buy the movie if they like the film just because “there's something new.” I think we can have an amazing transfer on the new Blu ray with all the special features included, and still have our original cover. Now that we've had to endure that Linda Blair cover for some time now, perhaps they will return to the art most people associate with the film. For an “Anniversary” edition, it would only seem fitting.

ParticipantI do absolutely agree, Captain Howdy. It's highly doubtful they would release a 40th anniversary Blu ray without a separate, new dvd release. As far as Blu ray has come, many still don't have the players, hence (for example) “Cloud Atlas” came out yesterday with a Blu ray/dvd combo for sale, or you can simply buy it on dvd for about ten bucks cheaper. It's all about money, in the end, and they're going to try and make as much as possible off this 40th anniversary train. The Blu ray will probably (or actually, most-assuredly) have more special features, but the dvd will (I'm betting) be there for your basic consumer as well, with maybe a commentary or preview attached. Nothing like what will be on the Blu ray, though.
I still hope they keep the cover art the same: The one with the priest and the light. I agree with Justin that there are so many stills they could use, but it's just not “The Exorcist” to me without the signature “poster”/cover art. Maybe they will release it with some sort of 3D effect (the way they did the special edition dvd of “The Silence of the Lambs” or something). I could deal with that, but I'm hoping it's not too different. I'm sure many people here noticed that the United Kingdom Blu ray version out right now of “The Exorcist” is the EDC cover with the green-colored Linda Blair, just like the U.S. version of the EDC dvd. I love me some Linda Blair, but that cover's got to go! 🙂

ParticipantThanks, Father B. That's what I was thinking, too, otherwise they wouldn't be in the $5 bins. I appreciate your post! 🙂
JSM
ParticipantWhat about the EDC version? It's all over the place for $5. Do you guys think they'll pull that, too, when the anniversary Blu ray edition is released? What's your take on that?
JSM
ParticipantThe 25th Anniversary does not have the line. Â The Version You've Never Seen/The Extended Director's Cut does.

ParticipantThanks for the post, Captain Howdy! Ok, so get this:
I got curious after your post, myself, and just put the Extended Cut dvd to the side and compared the 2 Blu rays (from the Blu ray book that came out in 2010 with the two discs). In the Extended Cut BLU RAY, it sounds exactly like the Extended Cut dvd…very pronounced “Hustle background” and “Action, CHRIS!”
I then put in the Theatrical Version Blu ray, and “Hustle backgroud” is more muted (but at least it's there), but “Action, CHRIS!” is not there AT ALL…with the sound all the way up!
Very strange.
