ParticipantWhat on Earth would possess (pun intended) WB to release a copy of the test reel to Dietz? After watching Dietz’s interview at Shockerfest 2009, she appears to think more of herself than what she really is. If you watch the entire episode, Dietz acts as if she played the role of Regan.
When asked about the Regan figurines released by NECA, she made some rather interesting statements about how odd it was to have figurines that look like her. Uh, I haven’t seen one of Captain Howdy yet. Plus, she has to backtrack about promoting the Planet of the Apes television series. She acts like she starred in the show, when in fact, she only did a small part on ONE show.
Shame on Dietz for saying she has a copy of the test reel. Get real, Eileen and stop making more out of yourself than what you are.
BTW: Dietz said she is writing her own book (yeah, right) about her adventures on the set of The Exorcist. I’m surprised since she sued WB for being uncredited for her bit parts in the film in ’73. I don’t suspect WB will be handing over any “behind-the-scenes” material to her ever. Oh, wait, that’s right … she can use her own copy of the test reel.
Yeesh!

ParticipantRatBoy … what fun! I can see you did the whole Hitchcock steps from M Street up to Prospect Street. In your last photo where concrete (leading to the steps) and the brick pavers (lined along Prospect), did you notice how impossible it would have been for Karras to crash through Regan’s window and land on the steps leading down to M Street? The facade wing was pretty amazing back then to pull off the trick, but it still doesn’t make sense from the film perspective does it (even if you think about the different levels from M to Prospect)?
Alas, it’s also interesting that the owners have the ugliest fence on God’s green earth. I also think it’s funny that black was chosen because of it’s identity with satanic beliefs … especially if you live in The Exorcist house! 🙂
I hope your had your four beers at The Tomb! 😉

ParticipantLOL! Yes. You could be reading more into what Kermode wrote. I would think (not convinced though) that Dietz had to have been shot for a pretty long length of time to get the “subliminals” we see. In fact, if you notice the lighting, background, angles, etc., I would say a pro (like an Assistant Director, etc.) shot the scenes for Friedkin to use.

ParticipantWelcome J73,
There is a makeup test on the Fear of God: 25 Years of the Exorcist included on the 25th Anniversary edition of The Exorcist. However, it includes the various types of makeups Dick Smith tried for the possessed Regan we now see. This is more than likely what Kermode is referring to in the BFI book.

ParticipantTimothy,
No one here said anything about their beliefs (who are YOU really calling an “idiot?”). This site is devoted to the film. If I were you, I would take a hike somewhere else to share your negativity.

PS: Folks, ignore the Timothy account.

Participant*The original FOG BBC version that aired was 74 minutes (according to IMDB).
*The 25th Anniversary DVD include the FOG at 74 minutes (according to my DVD).
*We have a 32-minute version on here.
*I have only seen three edited clips of Mercedes McCambrige that could not account for the other missing 15 minutes of film in totality.
*Was it really 90 minutes in length?Father Bowdern

Participantshy,
There were/are video clips on this website of the excerpts of McCambridge reaclling her role of the demon’s voice in the film.
This WAS definitely a part of the FOG, yet I have no idea why Kermode, or the others in charge of production, edited her out of the full presentation. It could potentially be the fact that she sued WB for the lack of giving her a film credit. McCambridge went on the rampage on every public venue and lambasted Friedkin because he insisted the voice was that of Linda Blair. I remember that very clearly in my youth.
Here’s a link that combines images and voice of both Friedkin and McCambrige.
Here’s the other link of the McCambridge speaking about her performance as it should have appeared in the FOG.

ParticipantGood work so far, Jagged. This reminds of me of how Leonardo chose to paint over the pearls on the Mona Lisa (of course, he was looking in the mirror at the time!) 🙂

ParticipantI know we would have gotten a better idea of the D.C. area had the sight-seeing tour that Chris and Regan took was in the film. I’ve been many times, and the best seasons there are spring and autumm. Of course, I know WB execs wanted to cut the film down to a more a “reasonable two hours.” Ya know, let’s fill the seats in the theater for this little horror movie. OOPS! Home run!
