ParticipantHeadpsin,
I'm sure I do. I have lots of copies of the film in various formats. (However, I refuse to buy anymore.)
WB tinkered with every copy since the days of Beta and VHS and Laserdisc … particularly with the sound. So you aren't seeing any illusions … you are just observant. I remember watching a VHS copy when I first got surround sound in last house and I thought they did the best job on that one with subtle nuances that others may not notice but were very intentional and well thought out.

ParticipantI think it depends on one's definition of demons.

ParticipantPersonally, I like your color choice and the way in which you altered the colors. There are so many of the blue and green tones that you speak of with The Exorcist artwork. I really don't have anything to “nitpick” because the scene makes sense to me.
Are you asking if the scene will make sense to a novices or someone who has seen the film (perhaps individuals in your design class)?
Oh, and welcome!

ParticipantWikipedia is a joke anyway. Every Tom, Dick, and Harry can input, revise, remove, etc. anything they want. It started off pretty good in the days of yore, but now it's shit.

ParticipantM.I.K.E.,
Your avatar is never frozen when I look on here which is quite often. I had this issue several years ago, but I can't remember who helped me. My avatar was animated for everyone else, but it failed on my end. Good luck!

M.I.K.E., I agree. DVD continues to live while Ultraviolet continues to find a pulse.

ParticipantOh, forgot. There is some redeeming good news for interested parties or newbs!
I think reganmacneil or one of the others on here mentioned not having a Blu-ray system. This version of The Exorcist will contain the BR, DVD, and Ultraviolent content according to the pic on Amazon.

ParticipantThanks … yep. It was released for pre-order for $34.99 with free S&H with a release date of October 8, 2013 (I'll still wait on the $5.00 bin because it's nothing new and the extras with end up on YouTube in a matter of days).

ParticipantI won't be forking out $50 bucks for a repeat. I'll just wait for it to hit the $5.00 bin at Walmart when they release the 50th Anniversary. Sad. I was hoping for more but I'm tapped out on buying and re-buying ditto versions that don't include an upgrade to the film. I could care less about the dribble commentaries which will hit the internet the day it's release. Tsk, tsk WB … 2023 try again.

ParticipantThanks so much, Justin! I agree it's probably a promo pic. I completely forgot about this quick shot on Karras in the pool of blood looking down The Exorcist (sorry Hitchcock) steps.
I tried to do a Google Earth search of the steps to see if any was close to this and did a few searches but no really clear hits. I wonder if the pic is newer or simply a rehash from the film's 1973 production days. Again, thanks for sharing this capture, Justin.
Oh, quite honestly, WB missed their mark by not taking advantage of the clever work you could have done with this artwork. I don't detest it, but my eyes immediately focused on the oddball spot on the middle landing and the terrible clone tool work in the parking lot … looks like snow. 🙂

Are we absolutely certain this is the cover art? It's been monkeyed with … a lot. I don't recall the sulfur-bulb lamps at all although I do like them.
I can honestly see JSM's point here. This is iconic to those of us who know the film well. However, I don't see it (the artwork alone) being sensational or ominous enough to capture any new viewer's attention.
I do ask if we are certain about the artwork because leaving the words “40th Anniversary” off is quite a big marketing blunder.

This is the final artwork, unless WB decide to revise it later on.
The lamps have always been there. The “fight pigs” graffiti has been removed, though, and you can see the bits of the image repeated at the top right where they've used the clone-tool in Photoshop to remove the parked cars.
Apparently leaving off “40th Anniversary” isn't strange for WB, they did the same thing with Enter The Dragon and just put a sticker on the packaging.
Thanks, Justin. I was actually too busy to pop the film in to do a comparison. As many times as I've seen the film, I don't really recall a view from the top of the stairs in this configuration … I only recall views from the bottom looking up. Do you or anybody else know where this photo appears in the film?
Thanks!

ParticipantLove it! Thanks, Justin. I wonder what scene was being filmed in the first photo (the crew, et al)?

Blatty said that he had been accused by Maclaine of stealing a photo from her house to use. Which he strongly denied.
Whereas he says the cover was created entirely by someone at Harper Row entirely without his input and is not nor never was Sachi.
Which makes one of them mistaken or a fibber. Take your pick.
Blatty's story seems very plausible considering most publishers typically create the artwork for dust jackets for the hardback copies and then paperback covers follow with that same artwork. Even if it's not Sachi, that picture instilled a sense of intended dread …
