“Friends” and pilgrims to A.Michel got to know through german and italian press that the former german archbishop of AM`s hometown and time knew she had seen the movie in 1974/5 together with two(religiously connected) friends from her student`s home and still gave O.K.to scandalous exorcism from wich treatment AM died of undernutrition and more damages caused by the ritual itself. Yes he admitts in the letter found in his household (from 1979) ,not even thinking of maybe watching the movie-even when he heard rumours of AM “reciting” and “acting”.
During the months-long exorcism Michels did repeat whole and quite indisputable “borrowed” from “The Exorcist” phrases like “The sau is mine” (in german)…even adding the male voice (everyone can do that if trying long enough). More details are known to investigators of the time and priests, but after 30 years germans may not be sued by these old lawsuits…Now someone please scream “SCANDAL”.

So she may have watched the movie. The only real scandal is the dire superstition of her Roman Catholic friends, clergy, and of course, poor Anneliese herself. As the Church directive quoted in The Exorcist states, medical possibilities need to be exhausted before leaping to the supernatural. Folk-fundamentalism is a real killer.
