If this has been posted before, sorry to repeat it. But on “Youtube’, the Turkish version of the Exorcist is up, in several parts. It follows the book a little more closely, in some small ways. Here is a link:

Yes we followed this years ago. It’s called SEYTAN and is an absolute riot!

I notice some of these clips are from my original captures, too.

Yep, SEYTAN could be counted as an ‘authentic remake’, I guess. No rights issues from Warner Bros. It never reached anywhere but Turkey and probably made very very little.

Very interesting. It is listed in imdb. What I find so odd is that Turkey is a predominantly Muslim country. What an odd place to remake a catholic religious film. Interesting though to watch a remke made from a country so close geographically to the location of the classic film’s opening scene.

Here’s the link for a “review” of Seytan. I laughed so hard at this person’s editorial. The pictures speak for themselves. In particular, check out the “electro-shock therapy” one with the rag “professionally stuffed” into poor little Gul’s mouth! Oh, we’ll have to call Captain Howdy, “Captain Lersen!”

    Enjoy the laughs:

And, for extra fun, watch this one from youtube … I about peed my pants at time slot 1:19. Personally, it looks like a child’s ride and when the mother gets on top … oh, brother, it looks like some type of weirdo 70’s porn gone bad, really bad!

Now I see what ColombiaExorcist meant by the scene where her throat swells up like a frog. I never even noticed this before. They do a real super exaggerated version of it in Seytan for dummies like me I guess. I this actually described in the book?

dsea, you’re not a dummy if you didn’t catch the “bullfrog” throat in the original film … you may have been “overting” your eyes after watching Regan being flung back and forth on the bed. Seytan is so funny and so poorly done! I’m sure they spent at least $100.00 on special effects! 😉

As I was trying to allude to earlier, Christianity is a small minority religion in Turkey. It is very odd that a Catholic movie would be remade there. Does anyone know if the characters in Seytan are portrayed as Christians or Muslims or does the film maintain religious neutrality. If Seytan was an Islamic re-purposing of the Exorcist story this would go a long way to explain why they remade it rather than dubbed the original. I doubt a Christian film would fare well there and there is probably a good demand for an Islamic retelling. If this is so, it also goes to show how little difference there actually is between Islam and Christianity in the sense that the story could be “converted” so easily in a nearly scene-for-scene identical form.

Are you saying this film is an authentic remake in Turkey circa 1974? If so, were there any rights issues re Warner?

Also, the crucifix looks strange in the masturbation scene. Has it been replaced with some kind of Islamic symbol?

dsea, I don’t think I could tolerate sitting through Seytan after seeing small snippets of it. Talk about “unGodly!” 😉
