Participant1. The Shining
In my opinion, the best horror movie of all time. It´s one of the only films to be superior to the novel. Kubrick was able to turn horribly grotesque scenes into beauty and a landmark in horror film history.2. The Exorcist
Although I think The Shining is the best horror movie ever, The Exorcist is my favorite and quite possibly the movie I´ve seen more times the whole thing. It deserved more than just 2 oscars for sure!3. Psycho
It took me 7 years to finally take the gut to see it. I saw the shower scene on tv when I was 6 and it traumatized me for life. It´s a true cinematic masterpiece.4. Suspiria
Probably the film that scared me the most. Great music, atmosphere, storyline, photography and probably the best use of colors in a motion picture, wether it´s horror or not.5. Black Christmas
One of the most genius slashers, has almost no blood, very “beautifully” and tastefully done death scenes, very intelligent storyline and is extremly tense and suspenseful, with a great sense of humor as well!6.Alice Sweet Alice
It´s actually an American giallo. Very suspenseful and well done, and the killer is the last person you would imagine to commit a murder. It´s Argento meets Hitchcock.7. Inferno
Quite possibly the best sequel filmed to date, alongside The Exorcist III. Heavily underrated and quite possibly Argento´s best after Suspiria and The Bird with the Crystal Plumage. Has also very creative murder sequences and the urban setting makes the story even more terrifying than the boarding school from Suspiria.8. Sisters
Twisted, weird and genius movie. One scene from this film has been ripped off in Dario Argento´s masterful Profondo Rosso. The acting is very convincing and the weird camera angles and it´s crazy storyline only adds to the horror and suspense of it.9. The Changeling
This film inspired many other famous ghost story/haunted house flicks like The Others and The Ring. Very scary and effective, and the bathtub murder sequence is one of the vilest and sickest death scenes in a motion picture, without having a drop of blood on it.
10. Les Diaboliques
The best French horror film filmed to date. Very tense and terrifying, filled with twists you would ever imagine, scary music, sets and great acting from the three lead characters. The remake from the 90´s starring Isabelle Adjani and Sharon Stone is ok, but only watch it if you´ve seen the original first. It´s true art.July 24, 2008 at 11:59 PM #20705kokumo

ParticipantHere is my definitive top ten horror list–
1. Carpenter’s The Thing—saw this at the drive-in when I was ten years old…changed my life forever. The sparse evocative dialog…the bass pounding thump of Morricone’s track over the credits as we drove away from the back of the pickup truck …all the while waiting to get back home so I could reread another Fangoria article and dream of going to film school to make movies like this.
2. The George Romero Dead films—Pure Genius including the newer Land and Diary films. My faves are Dawn of the Dead and Night of the Living Dead.
3. The Exorcist–granddaddy of them all. Still as harrowing and visceral at a gut level as the first day I saw it. I love Karras’s character…his own inner demons. His struggle between science and faith…awesome.
4. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre–I grew up around where they filmed it…need I say more. This film is pure grandiose snuff. Getting lost in South Texas farm country can be very unnerving.
6. Carpenter’s Halloween—The original slasher film. The template and mold that all others can try and copy. The first film that turned me onto Carpenter’s style.
5. Phantasm—saw on a rainy day this when i was young…have always loved it. I was at the perfect age for it and it scared the shit out of me for days. The scene in the graveyard where he wakes up out of his bed and the tall man is overhim and the ghouls reach up to get him—that one gets me everytime.
7. Suspiria–very eerie, creepy, and European.
8. Evil Dead–another masterpiece made on low budget…scared crap out of me.
9. An American Werewolf in London–Best werewolf movie ever….Great story with mix of comedy and the werewolf transformation is the most brilliant to this day.
10. The Blair Witch Project—best horror film to come out since the mid to late 80’s….Gave me that sense of creepiness that good Horror films should.Other notable films that have come out was The Descent and Shaun of the Dead. Loved them both. Also I could not leave here without giving props to the Universal Studio’s Classic Monster Films that I was lucky enough to grow up on.
Now Tell us yours…..
