ParticipantWelcome! This site rocks. Huge fan. Anyhoo…
It’s an okay film with lots of thought and depth, but thematically is the only way I can call it a sequel of any kind. There are some “links” with the original film, but I’d consider them “nods” only, if anything. To call this a “true sequel”, let alone a sequel, would mean another of Blatty’s films is a sequel (just because Blatty did it); A SHOT IN THE DARK could be a sequel. Okay, maybe I’m just being rude, sarcastic and difficult (please forgive me). 🙂 But do you see my point? TNC is about as deep and thoughtful and spirtual and well-made as THE EXORCIST, I suppose, but it’s a whole different universe; nothing, not even the tone, anchors it into the reality of 1973 Georgetown as envisioned by Blatty and Friedkin. We’d need a character FROM The Exorcist to appear and be named on screen, at the BARE MINIMUM. ‘Course, if only that much, it could in fact only be a glorified cameo or whatever. It’d be a start, though.
The true sequel to THE EXORCIST, in my opinion, is LEGION (before Morgan Creek “got” to it), or I’ll settle for THE EXORCIST III (the byproduct of Morgan Creek’s meddling with Blatty’s film.).
Respectfully my opinion,
M.I.K.E.

ParticipantHi All. I’m new to this forum, but have been enjoying the site and the insightful discussions on these boards. With all the talk about the sequels (and now, prequels) to The Exorcist, there’s been little mention of the story that Blatty himself saw as the first true sequel – namely, The Ninth Configuration. I’ve recently revisited both the novel and the film, and it has become one of my absolute favorites. Though hardly a horror story (it’s actually impossible to categorize!) I feel that the spiritual/theological content of the dialog and Blatty’s writing and directing style provide a strong link to both the original Exorcist and Legion/EIII. Then too, I was recently made aware that one of the main characters in the story, Capt. Billy Cutshaw, was indeed the very astronaut who Regan confronted at the party. This makes perfect sense, and really blew the whole thing open for me! Anyway, if you’ve experienced The Ninth Configuration (novel and/or film) yourself I’d love to hear your thoughts. If you haven’t, please do yourself a favor and check it out. It’s a bizarre ride, but well worth the trip!

ParticipantThe Ninth Configuration is an excellent film and is way better adapted from its source material to the screen than The Exorcist III. Yes, it’s a totally monster when compared to The Exorcist, but I see what you mean in terms of its issue placement and such. TNC is a great comedic, dramatic, gothic spiritual story. Very well written, acted, and directed.
I like how you brought up A Shot In The Dark. That’s a classic Clouseau comedy.
