Nice find, yes. Incidentally, anyone know if it was a lot a of red tape for Blatty to get permission to use that? And, not simply quoted, but recycled as the writing of a fictional character’s… interesting. Unimaginitive on one hand, too, but on the other… brilliant and inspired.

No, sorry, I don’t know if WPB had to cut thru red tape for the citation. He did a good job of clipping relevant portions of such a long text.
Has anyone else ever gone and read the entire “The Second Spring” sermon by John Henry Newman? That is, the one that Blatty uses in The Exorcist novel, borrowing it and using it as something Merrin had written.
It really is beautiful.
