ParticipantThere is another movie coming out on August 27th about a possessed girl called “The Last Exorcism”. Is anybody on this message board planning to see it? I’ve seen commercials about the movie but really don’t know what it’s about or if it’s a true story of an actual possession like “The Possession Of Emily Rose”. I like movies that deal with demonic possession so I might just check it out.

ParticipantI’ll definitely check it out, but my expectations are incredibly low.
Firstly, the trailer looks awful… like Blair Witch meets Emily Rose. Nothing looks original.
I do like the poster but that also seems like they’re trying to rip-off the spiderwalk imagery, which is fine – it’s pretty – but I’m certainly not giving into the flashy promo material like I did with Emily Rose. They ended up winning me over with that one, but the movie turned out to be a load of disappointing crap.
Plus I’m just not a fan of Eli Roth.

ParticipantI’m on the fence about this one. I do want to be scared, but not sickened. What does one take for a queasy stomach anyway? Dramamine?

ParticipantI just had to repost this from here to quench your question. (Click the word “here” in the last sentence.)

KeymasterThat’s a great post, Father! I guess you’ve read my article about it which I wrote when the trailer came out. I’m not terribly excited about this film, no.

ParticipantThanks, Cap! In the U.S., we’re being bombarded with television commercials and I’m still not tempted to pay to see the film. In fact, the commercials are the same trimmed-down version of the “best parts” of the trailer.
Unfortunately, I can’t find my original post back in late April/early May that was prompted by another member. Regardless, it appears our minds are syncing after reviewing the trailer. In total agreement with you is your observation: “Exorcist: The Beginning and Dominion: Prequel to The Exorcist were both so dreadful (not only did they bomb, they also got a hiding from critics) that studio Morgan Creek has all but shelved their Exorcist license until further notice.”

Correction: Actually I found a link to my secondary original post located here dated May 15, 2010. I believe I wrote the original, as noted above, in late April/mid-May. Sorry I can’t find the original-original. 🙂

ParticipantLooks like this movie is taking notes from Spiderman now.

ParticipantI was going to see this film but now that I know it is an unoriginal ripoff, I am having second thoughts. I think Hollywood figures that a lot of fans would be extremely angry if they were to remake “The Exorcist,” and there would be a lot of backlash so ripping it off would be the next best thing. I can’t see this movie doing well financially at all.

ParticipantJustin,
Now that is funny (and only tells me it’s going to get worse over the next two weeks!) Notice the new trailer here. For some unknown reason, Cotton’s exorcisms increased from 47 to 50. Uh, oh … there’s even advertising problems.

ParticipantUgh. I hate to defend this movie at all because it will probably suck but the 1928 Earling Iowa case supposedly had “wall clinging” as one of its supernatural occurrences.

ParticipantNo way in hell I’m watching this now, after seeing the trailer again. I mean.. Ooohh, she’s bent over a little. Scarryyyy.

I do hope the writers of The Last Exorcism chose to not use use these kind of setups and script:
“Let it be noted, too, that Father Theophilus addressed the devil in English, German, and again in Latin. And the devil, Beelzebub, and all the other devils, replied correctly in the very same tongues in which they were addressed. Apparently they would have understood any language spoken today and would have answered in it. Sometimes it happened that Father Theophilus, while in an exhausted state of mind, would make slight mispronunciations in his Latin prayers and words of exorcism. At once Beelzebub would intrude and shriek out:
“So and so is right! Dumbbell, you don’t know anything!”
“Dumbbell?” This one mighty nasty demon who curses like a school girl and uses suctions cups to climb the walls. 🙂

ParticipantYeah I caught that too but it’s also obvious Blatty used this case when he was researching The Exorcist. Mind you this was a pamphlet that made the rounds in the 30’s.

Participantetrigan,
I agree. “Dumbbell” was probably a naughty word like “mother fucker” back then. 😉
At any rate, I agree that Blatty had to know something about this case and used it later in his film The Exorcist III. I’m sorry to say, but this scene is so whacked that it makes laugh every time I’ve seen it.
Also, Blatty did a lot of research and included the levitation scene in The Exorcist based on the cases from various religious and spiritual accounts; i.e., Magdalena de la Cruz and Yogi Subbayah Pullavar. The phenomenon worked in the original, but caused hysterical laughter in the second, skewed attempt.
