ParticipantWell, I won’t be paying out again for that particular piece o shite.
Shame I was rather looking forward to a new release.January 22, 2009 at 11:59 PM #21620Jason Stringer
KeymasterI’ll be getting it regardless of the print. It’s the special features that are the selling point for me.

ParticipantAside from the extremely bad tacked on ending and the extra “subliminal” images I do prefer TVYNS. It feels a little more complete.

ParticipantMy only decisive move in purchasing yet another copy of this film will depend on the extras. (Let’s face it, they always end up on youtube, so you can peruse that section to death there and determine the value).
I am hopeful that WB has a loot of goodies for us. Plus, having Blatty and Friedkin talk about the film at the various filming sites might be a plus (as long as it isn’t anything like the thing Blatty did on DVD).
Cap, I’d love to see a vote button on the opening page about which version is liked the most as you’ve done in the past for other fun or hot items. This one is a “broiler!” Is this possible?
For me, if TVYNS is the only choice, I’d prefer the same as you Ghetto. The only really quality issue was adding the spiderwalk back in provided they use the original shot without the CGI blood).
But, there’s alway a FF choice on Blu-Ray that I can take advantage of. 😉

ParticipantTo begin with, I don’t Own an HD TV so I obviously don’t have a Blu Ray Player, and don’t expect to anytime soon.
But This Subject does mean something to me because I may one day have that format.
The Exorcist has had a huge impact on My life, both Artistically and Personally, and that’s just The Original Film, that’s not counting Legion or Dominion.
so My feelings are very mixed, I like certain aspects of TVYNS and others I don’t, I don’t care much for the tacked on Shot before the Iraq sequence.
most of the new Images in the film get on my nerves, I don’t mind a few additions, but not as many as there are, it may work in some films, but not this particular film.
at the moment the only extra howdy Face that I like is When Regan sees it in the Doctor’s office, I feel it is a bit more legitimate, and in general I’m glad that some of that footage is there, because in the original version she became sick and possessed a bit too abruptly, her mother says that she’s been sick, but before that there is no mention.
The parts from the Doctor’s office I would have left out would be Regan falling all over the place, that footage just doesn’t work. The Spider walk came as a surprise to me, not that it was put back in, but because how different it was, I have mixed feelings on it.
there is music added in places where it’s not really needed, But I’m not going to bitch about that or the recoloring of scenes.
in addition to the Doctor’s office, I’m grateful for the additional Merrin footage, especially the short conversation between he and Damien on the Stairs, it sums up so much.
the new ending is something I’ve never entirely gotten used to, the original version with Dyer at the top of the Steps worked for me, However the addition of Kinderman at the End helps make a much Stronger connection to
The Exorcist III.January 25, 2009 at 11:59 PM #21624Ryan
ParticipantWhat shot is tacked on before the Iraq sequence? It’s been so long since I watched TVYNS…
January 25, 2009 at 11:59 PM #21626Ryan
ParticipantAh, that one! I remember now.

KeymasterRyan,
An unknown couple walk past the MacNeil house in Georgetown and Regan’s bedroom light is turned off (or on… it’s been a while for me, too!)January 28, 2009 at 11:59 PM #21634fatherbowdern
ParticipantI think that’s actually a great scene to open the film with. I would have liked to have seen the date, “1973” at that point to lend a more documentary style (Friedkin’s intention). Plus, it may have eliminated some of the laughter from newer viewers.
January 31, 2009 at 11:59 PM #21650Jagged
ParticipantI think it’s an example of Friedkin second guessing himself to answer his critics (on original release no-one understood why the film opened in Iraq). Much like the rest of the inserts in TVYNS it’s a big mistake, serves no purpose and spoils what was already near perfect.
I liked bits of the 1st medical examination (I found Lindas performance unconvincing though), the language lab sequence and the extra scenes with Merrin. The rest of the inserts were tacky and overstated to an extreme.January 31, 2009 at 11:59 PM #21654demonregan
ParticipantI would think they could re-insert the ORIGINAL sspiderwalk complet footage with regan following sharon etc… on the new blue ray. what do you all think the ney special features will be except what we already know?
January 31, 2009 at 11:59 PM #21660fatherbowdern
ParticipantThe original spiderwalk probably would not have the same impact and, quite frankly, IMHO is quite laughable.
Truly, I’m now of the volition of the rumors that Friedkin thought the scene looked just plain stupid and out of whack from the rest of his documentary-style film. Of course, Friedkin claims it was “ineffective technically” and “too soon” in the film …
Car salesman, anyone? 😉

ParticipantCaptain Howdy, that’s true on the Oscars and I’m quite familiar with that fact. My comment was simply a hasty one in which I was thinking of other cinematic nominations and awards as well. I should have mentioned that in the first place. However, the intent of my comment was only to point out a very basic flaw in choosing the TVYNS over the original version of The Exorcist for Blu-Ray: the 1973 release is, IMHO, the film that made it a legend.
Additional similar aspects: Ted Turner bought a lot of classic films and colorized them to run on his TCM channel, much to the dismay of film critics and fans. Again, point in fact, IMHO, put makeup on the Mona Lisa to make her look more modern. Better yet, let’s crush the Hope Diamond into a million pieces.
Corrections in original post above for fact seekers …

Keymasterfatherbowdern, The Exorcist only won 2 Oscars out of its 10 nominations in 1974. They were for:
Best Sound: Robert Knudson & Christopher Newman, and Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium: William Peter Blatty

ParticipantAt this point in time, the original version of The Exorcist has been buried and it’s brother the TVYNS is now king as far as WB is concerned. True fans miss the real thing that was nominated for and won various awards located here.
Maybe Hollyweird will find more footage of Citizen Kane and Psycho and colorize them. They’re not classics either, right?
