And, if we’re not terrified enough, the box set of Aliens and Psycho will hit about the same time. What a great Halloween this will be!

Screw it, I had a countdown timer prepared but can’t embed it on here.

Sounds great! The only modifications I want to the original are removal of the piano wires in the exorcism scene (horribly obvious in HD) and the retention of the cleaned-up jump cut on the possessed Karras. They can do what they want with TVYNS: I don’t care for it!

    Gab,

Gotta love you! I agree about the TVYNS.

I’m sure WB is just transferring TVYNS BD and calling it, the Original Theatrical Release of The Exorcist on BD. Kind of makes sense because they can cut the hideous CGI and more ignorant scenes from TVYNS.

If they more finely tune some scenes, like the wires and the demon transformation that takes place with Karras, that would be great. I’ve scene The Exorcist in HD and those types of things are much more obvious. I’m also hoping they remove the cigarette smoke in the park scene after Chris drops her smoke the first time. Perhaps they can use CGI to cover Dietz’s vomit-tube makeup foul-up in the vomiting scene.

I do hope that WB doesn’t coward out on the original and leave Chris’ full statement in when she tells the telephone operator, “I’ve been on this fucking line for twenty minutes.” Why the cut in TVYNS is still beyond me and doesn’t make sense. Perhaps it was cut because they wanted to make Chris seem more diminutive and refined. 🙂 HA!

Just another thought. The year 2013. Thirteen is the ‘evil’ number and The Exorcist will celebrate its 40th anniversary. I think a 3D theatrical release will happen regardless of what Friedkin says. I’m sure WB execs have already assigned a group of techs to work on this, merely because 3D home theaters are and will continue to be the big push. In fact, if you stop into any of your electronic stores, the CRs give you the glasses to watch snippets of 3D movies. Conversion from 2D to 3D will be the great test and James Cameron is doing this for Titanic 3D for a 2012 release date. The prices for these 3D home theaters sets and the glasses continue to drop and by 2013 they could be the best package going. So, I believe we’ll find The Exorcist: The Ultimate Immersion Into Evil version in theaters and on shelves in 2013.

I too hope that’s left in. It really feels like Friedkin is trying to force onto us that Regan was definitely possessed (there’s not much question in the movie as it is), and that she couldn’t have learned the foul language from Chris.

I’d also like the shot of Regan laughing at the beginning of the party restored.

But I don’t have much faith in that. Both of those were also cut from the 25th Anniversary edition, and I’m sure the ‘original theatrical version’ will be that cut of the film.

Justin I don’t think those were cut from the 25th Anniversary Edition. I know they were cut from TVYNS but the 25th Anniversary Edition was the first version I saw and I distinctly remember seeing them in there. Also, I may be alone on this one but I’m a fan of the blue-tint in the 25th Anniversary Edition. I can almost feel the coldness during the exorcism.

Hmm maybe you’re right, I haven’t watch the 25th Anniversary edition for years.

As for the blue tint, it doesn’t make sense to me. Coldness doesn’t make a room blue. We all know it was literally that cold in there and the original had completely natural colours. The breath showing is enough IMO. It also takes away from Friedkin’s realistic documentary style – looks too polished.

I think Friedkin may have been shown how the film would look with the blue tint and he agreed (like Ghetto said … to give a more cold look to the film).

Being a diehard fan of the original, I’d much rather see it left alone … just use DNR without leaving artifacts would be fine with me.

God! I really hope it doesn’t. 3D is an artistic abomination a lot of us can’t even watch, not just because we have good taste, but also we don’t have the eyesight for it! Two people I know got migraines after watching Avatar. One work colleague’s girlfriend made it as far as an hour into the film, ran for the bathroom and vomited in the cinema lobby. Fifty years from now, when people are watching 2D movies running at 48 and 72 frames per second and some form of holographic laser visual medium is up and running, they’ll laugh at the millions of halfwits who permanently injured their eyes and caused themselves brain damage, developed epilepsy and so on, wearing crappy glasses with distorted vision films that lost forty per cent of their colour!

Look at all the 2D promotions for upcoming 3D movies: everything’s in focus. Everything looks flat. Camera movement is almost out of the question. Blatty’s Angel of Death moment in XIII? Forget it : couldn’t be done properly in 3D.

The sooner people realise that 3D is a gimmick little different from a fairground’s hall of mirrors, the better and Hollywood will forget their ridiculous flirtation with this inadequate garbage technology for anther 25 years! We had to put up with 3D crap in the 1950s and 1980s. Please God let this crappy time for cinema end soon!

Friedkin might have been all measures of wrong about things down the years, but in dismissing 3D for the creative cul-de-sac that it is he can even redeem himself for Jade, in my eyes!!!

    Gab,

I hear you and you’re singing to choir regarding some 3D. However, Hollyweird is bombarding theaters with 3D films that appeal to those from the 1950s and 1980s as well as much younger audiences and turning profits for the studios like mad.

I think when you point to Avatar you are making a good analysis. Yet the film proved to be successful through its proper use of 3D technology along with James Cameron’s inventive thinking. I, for one, did not see Avatar in 3D. However, I did the film in 2D and kept wondering about the 3D aspects that were so obvious in almost every scene. Avatar didn’t merely go to the top of money heap based on the story line alone; the 3D aspect coaxed audiences into theaters and Cameron is enjoying his bang for the buck he invested upfront. Now, audiences will delve into the oceans of Pandora in Avatar 2.

I digress. WB has been smart enough to use (exploit to some degree as well) The Exorcist as a vehicle for cash since it the release 1973. At my age, I can’t tell you how often this film went to theaters and made money and how many times the film has been released in different formats (including a laserdisc which I owned) for “home theaters.” If WB is getting on the band wagon with BD and adding this much extra material, they know their cash cow is ready for milking again (especially by removing the original version for purchase).

So, I agree with you. However, whether it’s a gimmick or not, and if the current trend continues, we’ll be seeing Regan projectile vomit straight into faces of the audience. 😉

    Hi guys!
For me, The Exorcist has gotten to the point where:
    – You can throw any line of dialog from the film at me, and I’ll recite the next lines of dialog.
ie: “Couldn’t you put her someplace else?”
“Like what? Private hospital? Who got the money for that, Dimmy? You?”
It’s *that* ingrained in my mind.

    – I’ll snap up (almost) anything Exorcist related. A figurine, a bobblehead, an ancient VHS copy in the black clamshell case. Yeah, I haven’t gotten The Exorcist Anthology set, with that Exorcist: The Beginning font.
    – I’ll be purchasing the Blu-Ray on Day One… for the supplemental features. That’s what I’m most jazzed about. New stuff, old stuff, whatever’s in the WB vaults, put it on the disc! Blu-Rays can store a ton of info. Just make it the be-all and end-all definitive disc set.

The “original” original print, with the possessed Karras jump-cut instead of the morph would be great, but if it ain’t there, well whatever!

Just some comments regarding this release for you guys:

When on the phone with Bill the other day, he mentioned that Billy Friedkin is extremely excited about this release, and that the fans won’t be disappointed. Unfortunately they didn’t end up doing the “tour of Georgetown” walk with Bill and Billy as first reported, but they did interview them separately, so new footage of them reminiscing about the movie will still be included.

He also mentioned that there would be a signing session with himself, Billy, Linda Blair, and (perhaps) some more of the cast, I can’t quite remember, but he definitely said Linda would be there.
