The line for the opening of The Exorcist in Omaha

World-Herald staff writer Micah Mertes has put together a fascinating collection of the Omaha newspaper’s clippings surrounding The Exorcist’s opening in 1974.

The Exorcist was a hot topic at the time with critical praise, religious outcry and public curiosity making headlines. Originally scheduled to open in March 1974, the film was brought forward to February to meet demand.

It’s great to see clippings like these documenting the era. Nobody had experienced anything like The Exorcist before (or since, if we’re being honest) and I find it absorbing to see the reactions as they were being publicized at the time.

You can read the article and see all of the clippings here. I have posted some key examples below.

Captain, thanks for this interesting bit of cultural history. If we can judge by the media cites, Omaha was unable to see the film's subtleties and religious meaning beneath the gross-out sfx. That was their loss, of course.

This is amazing. Thanks so much for posting it. Between this and the YouTube video showing audience reaction to the film I’m thinking a documentary , In the spirit of ‘Room 237’ would be amazing. I have always been fascinated by the way this film affected people the year it came out.

Jagged, try viewing via the main page instead of this forum.

There's an issue with some images formatting on this forum (updating very soon).
