I just recently watched The Exorcist for the umpteenth time and saw a scene I never saw before of Regan strapped to the bed at the Beringer obviously screaming curses and obscenities. The question I have is did Chris stay at the Beringer with Regan or did she fly back home? I often wondered too if the doctors at the Beringer had ever seen a case like Regan's,what was their diagnosis and why did they suggest to Chris that Regan needs to be placed in a mental institution?

“Somnambulaform possession” if memory serves. The Dr's recommended the modern version of an asylum, but Chris wouldn't “put her in one of those places”. Then they recommended exorcism as a potential last-ditch effort at effecting a cure, which to Chris was equivalent to taking Regan to a witch doctor. So she elected to care for Regan at home.

Also, in the novel, they thought that Regan’s disorder was hysterical and the product of suggestion, by her reading chapters of the witchcraft book.
