Actually, she does call her Rags in the film, but only once or twice- I think one instance is immediately after Karras takes his fatal plunge.

Ellen also calls her Rags in the “tuck into bed” scene, when she says she loves her. But in the novel, Chris calls her Rags all the time.

Chris also asks her “What’s doin’?” several times, but indeed this is nowhere to be heard in the film. Merely a touch to flesh the character out in the novel that doesn’t necessarily have any place in the film.

I just asked my self that very same question the other day. I just read the book as I worked the night shift as x ray tech in a creepy old hospital. Then i deceided to buy and watch the movie and that questioned of why the mom did not call her Rags as she did in the book. But good point Paul Landcaster never thought about it like that .

Why in the book does Chris Mcneil sometimes call Regan “Rags” her nick name but never in the film? And the hypnotisies scene Could of been longer like in the book? Still the best film ever tho!

“Chris also asks her “What’s doin’?” several times, but indeed this is nowhere to be heard in the film.”

Blatty based Chris mode of speaking on Shirley MacLaine too.
