Welcome, JP! I vote for McCambridge, but if you want to hear what was originally in store for us fans, watch this (and thank God Freidkin went for Mercedes!):

I’m on the fence about this. While I do think Mercedes McCambridge was absolutely perfect for the full on possessed voice. I think this voice may have been creepy in Reagan’s earlier phase of possession. I dunno it probably wouldn’t work but the voice in that trailer is kinda creepy to me.

It’s really ashamed that the sound editors couldn’t do more with Blair’s voice because I think she would have won the Academy Award over Tatum O’Neil in Paper Moon. I guess the Academy freaked about giving a 14-year-old an award after listening and watching her violent performance versus O’Neil’s “cute” one.

I do remember the controversy that Mercedes created over the fact that it was her voice as demon, and not Blair’s, that deserved to be recognized; e.g., Mercedes comments didn’t help Blair’s recognition at Oscar time.

I must say, I understand where Mercedes is coming from…after all, she went through quite a lot to obtain that amazing voice which made the movie.
But then again, I also agree that Linda’s performance was outstanding and probably deserved the Oscar.

    Hey JP,

Check out the link (June 2006 Archives) right here on CaptainHowdy.com. Howdy has three videos of McCambridge:

RARE VIDEO FOOTAGE: Mercedes McCambridge demonstrates the voice of Pazuzu

She’s incredible to listen to. I kept thinking they were dubbing her voice, but she actually did a demonstration of her talent by reading a portion of the demon-voice script on the Mike Douglass Show in the 70’s.

No problem. I thought you might enjoy “seeing” the real Pazuzu! 🙂

I really wish I could see that demonstration she did on the Michael Douglass show…I wonder if there are any videos of it anywhere.

JP, I’m not sure if Mike’s old shows are anywhere to be found. I did do a quick search of youtube and nothing came back. It’s really amazing to see her read the script using the voice. Pure Talent!

Well let me start out by saying that I’m new to Captainhowdy.com, and that I joined so that I can share in the appreciation of the greatest movie ever made.
Now I have a question about the famous “ROAR” that is heard when Merrin meets Karras. (which is probably one of my favorite parts!)
Is that the voice of Mercedes McMambridge? Usually when she’s talking you can tell it’s her, but this roar hardly sounds human! Just wondering…

dsea, I think Mike’s show is probably too old to be on this website, but … you get an A+++ for sharing this website! Way to go! 🙂
