    Welcome!

I could be wrong about this- but I think that the demon being refered to as Pazuzu was thanks in large part to the horrible sequel. In reading the book and watching the film-I always felt that Merrin knew that he had encountered the Demon based on other signs- not an identifying name or anything. Plus theres he part in the book when he walks into the room and Regan says “this time your going to lose”

Hey everybody, This is my first post :)!!!

There has been a topic of discussion that has struck my interest. I remember there being a discussion about Rather the demonic force that possesed Regan was the devil or not. But the topic only had a few posts and was quickly abandoned. I have read the novel twice and watched the movie about five times.

I know when Father Merrin is in Iraq he finds the Pazuzu statue. But there’s no direct Evidence that Pazuzu Possesed Regan. I mean Merrin never mentioned the name “Pazuzu” during the Exorcism. he Simply said I have faced this demon before. Is there any interviews where Blatty Says that Pazuzu Possesed Regan? Please Explain

Oh yes I do recall Sharon saying to Chris that the demon said “This time you’re going to lose”.

Blatty said in interview he thought it was the entity known in ancient times as Pazuzu that did the possessing (hence his choice of statue etc. at the beginning of the book) but he couldn’t be sure. You are correct that there is no direct evidence as it’s not easy to unite catholic faith with a Babylonian demon, at least not on the surface. Suffice to say that his take was that whatever was responsible for the possession was responsible for what the Babylonians and Assyrians called Pazuzu. Exactly what the nature of that entity may be is open to conjecture and impossible to pin down.

If we look to the very basics about Pazuzu here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pazuzu, I believe Blatty had a lot of information about this demon coming from his writing “magic hat” and Blatty is an expert researcher.

I do believe Merrin knows the demon very well prior to the first exorcism at the dig area in Ninevah in Northern Iraq which leaves an air of mystery about the relationship.

Plus, I believe it’s all too apparent that Merrin already knows that the demon he must wrestle once again is Pazuzu who is now possessing Regan.

There are too many clues, signs, cues, and dialogue that are relative in the book and movie about Pazuzu (however, the mystery is a great part of The Exorcist).

The actual name “Pazuzu” does not appear in this film, but the dud follow-up Exorcist II: The Heretic.
