This statistician did something completely different with real data and what true horror films are all about. She excluded films that drew a line between the horror and thriller category.
AFI ranked – #1: Psycho; #2: Jaws; and #3: The Exorcist. However, looking at the gross box office revenue adjusted with inflation, this makes The Exorcist the true champ. I like both Psycho and Jaws, but they both had a great advantage over The Exorcist. Their MPAA ratings.
Psycho (1960) was not officially rated as M (Mature) until 1968. Jaws (1975) received a PG rating from the MPAA (PG-13 was non-existent then). The Exorcist barely inched by with an R rating, excluding it from the masses. The Exorcist also had a lot of religious zealots boycotting the film in front of theaters until the theaters caved and stopped showing it despite the heavy income.
AFI’s rankings are based on “experts” in the field of film. While money doesn’t play a role in their rankings, it’s a bit odd that a movie like The Exorcist has had so many viewers, yet gets a number 3 on their list.
